I just bought a 78 Cobra with a 302 4 speed. My first day to drive the car and enjoy it I lost 2nd gear. It won't even stay in gear if you try to hold it in. I don't think I want to fix the 4 speed but would rather replace with a 5-speed. Can anyone help me and let me know which tranny or simply a 'from to' year 5.0 would bolt to the block. Thank you for any help you can provide.

T-56 leaking? - 8/10/2007 4:09:54 AM

Recently I noticed very black oil splatter inside my bell housing, as I shine a flashlight through the hole where the clutch fork comes out.  It's not much, however it produces a few drips on the ground after driving the car.  I'm running a 5.0 w/EFI and supercharger in a 1965 Fastback, my trany is a T-56.  Both the engine and trany have under 3K miles.  I checked the fluid in the trany; its clean.  The engine oil is also new.

Can I assume this leak is coming past a broken/defective seal (either from the trany or engine)?  And that the reason it's black is that the oil is running over dirt/grime and getting dirty when it drips on the ground?

This happened a day after I drove the car at a road race track, in temps exceeding 110 degrees.  When the car hit 240 degrees, I pulled off the track.  The car never boiled over.

I suspect that the heat of the day, the track and my engine possibly ruined some seals in the trany.  Any thoughts, opinions or advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I have a 2002 Mustang GT with the factory 5 speed manual transmission (3650).  The car has 73K miles.  I am getting a "clunk" when I shift from 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4, shifting normally and not accelerating hard at all - normal around-town driving.  Only if I'm very careful in releasing the clutch with light feathering do I get a smooth, quiet shift.  The clutch doesn't slip or feel very worn and the car has no trouble going into gear.  Transmission fluid was replaced about 10K ago.  Any ideas what could be going on here?  Any and all input is greatly appreciated

I have a built motor (specs in Signature) have a SPEC Stage3 clutch/flywheel, single piece aluminum drive shaft and 3.90 gears...I'm installing a Kenne Bell 2.6L mid next month.  Will my 3650 handle it?  If I wanted to go to more fuel economy what Trans is recommended for an 07 GT?  TKO600?

Depends on your driving style.  If you are a smooth shifter, the tranny will hold up.  If you slam the gears, you'll want something like the TKO.  If you're really pushing the power, however, you'll want to step up to an auto.

I just got a 79 mustang notch. It has a four banger in it,but I already got a 351w for it. The car has a four speed in it ,and I was wondering if that trans will bolt to the 351. When I got the car the rear was gone so I got a 90 5.0 rear. Im just worried about the trans. Thanks for the help.

t45 and 3650 are not a racers friend. they do not like speed shifting. weak synchros, rails, and forks in both.

05GT myself, I even had 'built' transmission (26spline, heat treated gears, bla bla bla)... TRUST me... get a TKO 600 and be done.

Save you a lotta downtime and b/s;  only wish I'd installed a TKO from day 1
