If the plugs are not fouling out, then it probably isn't rich. It is funny, that it runs fine in park. I would suspect something to do with the transmission. If the plugs are fouling out, then your carb is set too rich. you can adjust the mixture using the idle mixture screws. Did you plug up the PCV yet? I guess you can try that and take it for a spin.

Another thing, The pertronix system, should have a 12 volt switched system. It shouldn't make a difference, but if you have the red wire going to your coil, it could strand you one day. Did you gap the module right, when you installed it, and is the vacuum advance working right?

scott, i double checked that pressure conversion and 0.61 bars is exactly 18 inches of mercury.
so what does that mean? that there is no vacuum problem then?

ow my god, we've been looking in the wrong direction i'm afraid.... gonna get that tranny vacuum hose check done, that way we know that too...

hope too catch you guys later today, but being weekend and all i guess you guys are all out driving your stangs.....sigh....

here's the page were i did the conversion:
http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/conversions.html

and then on pressure you can select all possiblities.

Oh man!!! Harald, I am very sorry. I should have realized 1 bar is absolute vacuum. Well that's about as big of a screw up as someone can do!

Again, very sorry about that!!!!!

Boy-oh-boy, am I glad you didn't pull the timing cover off. That would have been a huge waste of time and money.

Yes removing the check ball will increase the speed of the secondaries opening. But it can also cause a stumble, so you need to balance that with the type of driving, and engine condition. So if you remove it, don't lose it. A stock properly jetted carb should run well.
Any chance the floats are sticking? what happens when you pull the float level screws out with the car running? The fuel should just be up to the bottom of the holes.

scott, what makes you think that i didn't take the timing cover off......

only kidding haha, no i'm glad too. because............

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!

i tried with the check ball out, but that worsened the situation completely, even in PARK. so i put the check ball back in, but completely by accident i forgot to hookup the linkage between the diaphragm and the secondaries...
cranked it, and it never ran so smooth.... so then i realized what had happened. put it in drive and OW YEEEEEAAAAAH, it keeps going. not only that, i put it in drive, adjusted the idle, shifted back to park, and the rpm only went up a wee little bit. so it's just a matter of playing around with the mixture now to get that sorted. but then for the secondaries, i assume that i need to put in the heaviest spring available or one below that, to get the secondaries to open when necessary, because right now they don't open at all, they're just a little open because of the adjusting screw on the bottom of the carb. so it was clearly overflooding the engine with fuel, causing it to stall...

so will try to get my hands on the spring later this week.

all this leaves me with one final question.

---> how come my ignition advance is still reading 20 degrees advanced? i did do the test with the screw driver in the number one plug hole, and that seems to be spot on the 0 degrees mark. how come then? very strange, because tried to put it back to 6 degrees advanced after i found out all the rest, but it dies on me when i do that plus i don't even succeed in starting the engine.... weird.

anyway, happy day today, will get it all fixed now. thx to all you guys for all the help so far. but please, lend me some of your insight in the advance situation then?

Congratulations!!!

The Cam grind is somewhat agressive, as is the compression. Add to it the Octane of the fuel you use, and it may just be a cumulative thing.

Timing specifications are a guide based on a stock engine. I'd set up the timing to what works for your motor. Base, Centrifugal, and Vacuum.
Also make sure your vacuum advance is hooked into a ported vacuum source.
