The ticking I hear that sounds like lifters could be exhaust, so I'm told.  The ticking happends around 50 mph in 5th gear when I give it gas, and does happen in most other gears at low rpms.  I can't hear it at high revs.  I thought that since I had timing advanced to 12 degrees, it was just a little bit of preignition - nothing to worry about.  But my question is - The exhaust leak would most likely be around the manifold right...so just feeling for some leaks should be sufficien> or is there a better way?  I still think its preignition.

Retard the timing alittle and see what happens.

You should back off the bolts to your headers and take a look at the gaskets and see what kind of shape they are in...

Chances are if you just put headers in that they are leaking.  Even if you did everything right they still will leak on occasion.  Just check to make sure that everything is tight all the way down the line.  If you didn't torque the bolts in the right order or to the right ft-lbs it can cause a problem.  Better to double check.

I would retard the timing a little and see if that alliviates the issue also.

It takes 5 seconds to blow a gasket on headers.

Retard the timing and see what happens, if it doesn't go away I'd do what Silver and I suggested. If it sticks around, you got some issues....

Ill tighten them today.  And check for leakage, geez i dont remember the tightening order.  Is it just from the center out, and no two next to eachother?  or what?95Stealth30237979.570474537

So I pop the bonnet, and start tightening the bolts. There were 4 bolts that were about ready to fall out, and the rest we're pretty loose.  I'm going to get some locking bolts, but I'm glad I fixed the problem.

Most likely cause is the low H pipe that bangs on the ground sometimes and rattles the system.  I'm sure the connection between h pipe and headers is loose as well.  I cant wait for my mags and X pipe.

if they bang on the ground sometimes, the gasket between them may have blown out too.  this happened quite a few times on my buddy's 96' gt before we got better springs....but if it's fixed, i guess that's not it

Yea, the gasket may be blown, but its not really a problem, aftermarket headers always need tightening.

I havn't ordered mags yet DAN, and they're not crap, better performace.  Yes I'll loose that glorious American Thunder sound, but Mags are great mufflers.

Didnt you (DAN) just post in the "gt exhaust" topic that mags were great and you loved yours?

Hey 95, I don't think Dan was saying that mags are crap. If you read his post again I think you will realise that he is saying that "YOU" will crap because of how impressed you are with them. Anyways good luck with 'em I'm sure you will be pleased.
