What kind of shape is it in?
First step is a plan of action. Think about what you want, how long you are willing to take to get it there, what you can afford to spend.
Just like Ford does when they design a new car. First the designers come in, they have this vision of the most awesome car anyones ever seen. Then the engineers come in. They have to make it a reality. Then the accountants come in. They have to make it affordable (with the exception of the GT40

). Then they all start having these big fights and arguments. After many bloody noses and black eyes, we get a beautifully designed and engineered '05 Mustang Convertible that the average Joe can afford.
You need to think the same way, only I'd stop short of beating myself up
If you could do anything you wanted with your '77 what would it look like? What are your parameters (daily driver, track only, trailer queen, etc)?
What's the coolest car you've driven and why was it so cool? What can you do with your new ride to make it like that.
Is a 50,000 Watt audio system more important than a supercharger?
One thing I like to do is make it safe to drive and then drive it for a while. I get a better idea of what I want to do. I see all kinds of the same type car too once I start driving it around, so I can get ideas from others.
All starts with a plan. Invest some time on the internet, and at the book store. Anything you can do to use this as part of a homework assignment or school project? Might as well kill two birds with one stone. There's everything from advanced math to chemistry, to economics to english, to art. You name it and it's all in that car.
Have fun and keep us posted on your progress.
