Ha. I just posted about this too. I was wondering the same thing about my 289. To put on a 4 valve carb, you have to put on a 4 valve intake manifold first.
You technically can install a 2 barrel carb on a 4 barrel intake, but unless you were pushing a higher cfm carb I doubt it would do much. It's a step in the right direction if you're planning on changing to a 4 barrel later.
Ain't no valves in a carb. Just venturi. It makes no sense to put on a 4v carb without first putting on an intake designed for a 4v carb. And, if you are going to go through the trouble of adding a 4v carb, you may as well put on a better intake manifold than a stock one. That is where you get your HP from, not from the 4v carb.
I beg your pardon Soaring, but there is a power valve in performance carbs such as Holley’s and Barry Grant Demon series. Don’t know about the Ford stock crap or Edelbrock carbs[:'(], so don't be too hasty in saying there ain't no valves in a carb.

Hey, that Motorcraft (Autolite) 4100 carb is a tough carb to beat. And, it ain't got no valves.

The Motorcraft (Autolite) 4300 carb is a tough carb to beat as well!
True Dat. I know there are a lot of performance carbs out there that are tough to beat for performance machines, but it sounds as if the original poster doesn't have a performance engine. I would stick with what is tried and true before venturing off with aftermarket carbs for a stock engine.
