13? He's old enough! I've got motor oil for blood, and so will my kids. Kid, if the man in your family isn't teaching you this stuff, then you should definitely try it for yourself. Just make sure that you are in an area with LOTS of space all around you, like an empty supermarket parking lot or a big field. Make sure you have a parent with you!!! Do what they told you about the shifting. If you want to do a burn out, rev the engine to about 3000 rpms, release the clutch all the way, and AS SOON as you start moving, put your foot on the brake. Once your foot is on the brake, you will have to accelerate much more--the more you accelerate, the more you should push the brake--the idea is to keep the car relatively still, while the rear wheels spin. This happens because when you push the brake pedal, you are only applying the brakes to about 85 percent to the front, and 15 percent to the rear, so, the front brakes will hold the car still, but they won't stop the rear ones from spinning. REMEMBER!: Doing this DESTROYES the tires and the rear brakes (rear rotors too, sometimes). Also, it puts the engine and driveshaft under a LOT of stress. Some cars are just destroyed after doing ONE good burnout. So, if you don't want your parents to get really upset about taking the car, and much less, destroying the car, make sure you are old enough to work to pay for the parts. Have fun my friend! You WILL let us know how it turned out? God, I can't wait to have kids.

No he's not old enough. You have to be mature and have responsibility to be driving. NO wonder theres so many accidents.

Did I say he should be on the road? No. I said he should have a parent with him and be in a field somewhere. And he most definitely IS old enough to be a car enthusiast--When I was his age, I was motor go-carts all around the neighborhood--
sod off, man--no one's advocating illegal behavior here. Maturity is begotten by experience and loss--do you know the reason why most 17 year old kids are in so many accidents? Because they've known neither. I encourage our 13-year old here to get his hands dirty, learn about mechanics, and hell yes, get behind the wheel whenever he can get an adult with him--xperience as much as he can--he'll be more mature and responsible by age 18 than most adults.

Theres no reason for a 13 year old to learn how to drive a car. If you nthink he should learn to drive at 13 then you have a serious problem. Learning about mechanics is a totally different story.

My dad would always let me drive SLOWLY on the empty country backroads by the time I was 13. Lots of 14 year olds I know who grew up in the country are better drivers than most adults. They drive tractors and equipment and trucks on farms....dirtbikes, ATVs, boats. I have seen a 14 year old get in his fathers blazer and back the boat trailer down the ramp with his father in the boat.....It was me
Kick ass...I'm glad xaerus and me aren't the only ones living on planet earth, and not planet neurotic.

I started out driving my dad's manual jeep around our ranch when i was 12. it taught me a ton about cars and what to do and not to do when driving. When i took drivers ed and was driving with my instructor i told him that i had driven jeeps on ranches for a while. He said, "Kids always do better when they get their license if learned to drive on ranches when they were young." That was a certified driving instructor who said that. So keep on learning about cars, and most of all keep on driving!!!
P.S.- some people are morons, don't listen to them

Theres a reason you need to be a certain age to get a licence. Guess you kids are too imature to realize that. But when you own a house and you want to risk loosing it then let your 13 year old drive around on the road. You guys need to grow up alittle bit.

Let me guess, you're a conservative republican, right? You are of the TYPICAL kind. The system has you SO wound up and scared, that the simple and GOOD things in life are taboo!! Too scared to live life, and bound by such strict rigidities that you don't really know how to ENJOY.
Risk of loosing it, ey? Let me tell you something--You just stepped into my playground. As a law student, I can tell you, no one has ever lost their house to indemnify their 13 year old that crashed the car. Insurance probably won't cover it, but you STILL could not get a judgment against the kid and his uncle--maybe a little off of a homeowner's policy, but no court would ever take your house because your 13 year old kid crashed the car. As a matter of fact, in most states, your residence is not reachable by creditors under equity. And what are the chances that ANYTHING other than a fender bender would ever occur with the kid driving with his ex-cop uncle beside him? Nada.
You, my friend, need to take your balls out of the jar where you keep them and put them back on. Take a deep breath. Feels good, eh? The number of injuries caused by prepubescents learning to drive with their parents beside them number in the dozens per year, compared to the THOUSANDS that occur by people that soup up their hot-rods and are so lauded in these forums. That's COUNTING the fenderbenders.
We need to grow up? You need some perspective. And to stop living scared.

Thats why auto insurace is so damn high because of the people like you. What does an ex-cop mean? Nothing at all. Sorry but you are totally wrong. The boys PARENTS are responsible for him. And is there a shield around the car because his uncle is there? Yeah, ok. No chance of getting into an accident, please you must live in a hick state. Come to NY. And yes the courts will award a huge restitution if anything major happens so there goes your credit for the next 20 years. And good luck getting your homeowners to pay out. So go ahead and let the boy drive. But if you ever own a house then you will think different.
And I was talking about kids playing in the steet getting hit, not a nother vehicle. You drive down side steets where kids live.
But do what you want. The laws are there for a reason. Good luck with the house.

Do you know what dime a dozen means? Interesting story. You probably wouldn't say it if you knew.
Anyhow, lawyers are not all the same...but it seems that New Yorkers are? I live and study in Miami--we have more minorities than NY (proportionally), PRESENT COMPANY INCLUDED--and since you ARE playing my kind of ballgame, let's set the facts straight: Although you're right that guardians are usually legally responsible for their children, that is not always so. In this case, since you're with him, then probably yes. You will get restitution if you suffer damages AND (please stress the and) you are soluble. What does that mean? That means that you have the ability to pay restitution. Assets they can collect against. Let me be clear: YOU TAKE A MUCH LARGER RISK with both your credit rating and your life everytime that YOU YOURSELF set out into the street to buy groceries, than this kid is. You are more likely to be hurt by anyone else. You're right, homeowner's is sluggish anywhere. But again no one will take your house. It's called the principle of equity, stemming from land ownership and common law rules of property rights. No one can kick you off your land, not even the King (only the Church, but that's another story).
And, again, I truly wish you would pay attention. NO ONE HERE SAYS A 13 YEAR OLD SHOULD DRIVE IN NEW YORK. That's crazy. But then again, it seems, so are you. Backstreets and parking lots are the same as driving in New York, right? And in your world, even if a car should drop from the sky and hit him while he's driving, his uncle would lose his house?
OK...that's enough of that. This argument has lost appeal to me (get it, pun pun). Do what you will. But consider my advice about the jar. Seriously, you need to get those back.
