Anyone ever run full time a V8 Stang with nothing but pipe from the cats back?</P>

I don't mean hacking off the exhaust system at the cats. I'm talking about replacing the mufflers with pipe.</P>

I'm sure someone here has. Tell about it, if you would.</P>

THANKS!!!</P>

runing no muffers actually causes loss of power and sounds horrible. it some thing a hillbilly does when he is low on fundings.

he may not have worded it correctly (as to not sound like a jerk)...but...it does cause lack of low-end power

dude one more post towards me and youll see. im not here to talk s**t on ppl but, if you keep it up i will. so leave it as it is.

no muffers is provened that it sounds like ass. and you lose backpressure. think about it if no muffers is the key dont you think more ppl would do it. but since it sounds horrible ppl buy mufflers. and look at the charts on this subject.

i don't know what the big deal is here...no mufflers has been proven (like ohsoquick wrote) on charts to have a loss of power. the ONLY way it's going to help on your typical street car is trying to reach top speed, where backpressure becomes your enemy.

thank you fiveohno...point now said again

only removing the mufflers and replacing them with pipe is not going to lose that much backpressure, especially enough to lose power, and super especially if you have cats on it still.

if you want to run no mufflers they sell a baffled S-pipe that you can install in place of mufflers.

You guys are killing me with your total BULLs**t backpressure statements.</P>

Do you realize the whole point of headers is to reduce backpressure as much as possible? Do you realize that the best thing you can do is run open headers for performance, especially on a V8? </P>

Would you like me to go time-slip hunting and pull out my time slips from my modified 88 Iroc-z with the cut-out both CAPPED AND UN CAPPED?</P>

I see your car is modified, I would assume you would understand this debate, but I guess I'm wrong.</P>

During the exhaust stroke, a good way for an engine to lose power is through back pressure. The exhaust valve opens at the beginning of the exhaust stroke, and then the piston pushes the exhaust gases out of the cylinder. If there is any amount of resistance that the piston has to push against to force the exhaust gases out, power is wasted. </P>

</P>

</P>

Here's some more information, hold tight while I keep researching this even more. </P>

on a low compression motor backpressure is good. on a high compression motor like 13:1 it is good to run open headers since then its not a street friendly car.

Keep arguing it, if you went with HUGE headers on a fairly otherwise stock motor with a cut-out you would see HP loss. BUT this won't be the issue for any of these people here. </P>

you want a little bit of back pressure...not the amount that comes stock though, hence the complete exhaust...or turndowns after the mufflers. back pressure is basically what the engine uses to "push off" of (torque)...therefore it being needed in bottom end. with the headers and h-pipereplaced on my car i gained24hp (measured with theg-tech pro...average of 5 runs...198hp STOCK-&gt; 222hp after the exhaust...just to show you the gains of full exhaust)</P>

what about the states like good ol' south carolina...no inspection, cops don't care about loud exhaust...yet pretty much everybody runs exhaust systems, EXCEPT PEOPLE AT THE DRAG STRIP WITH HI-PO ENGINES.</P>

Laws, my friend. If I could run open headers all day long, bet your ass I would. And I would take two identical cars, do the same mods but put a cut-out infront of that cat...we can both take a seat behind the wheels and you'll be a believer when we take that ride to the dyno, or if I get impatient and decide to show you first hand from a set of lights. <IMG src=smileys/smiley2.gif border="0"></P>

baaahahaha...you know...i'm getting scared...<IMG src=smileys/smiley11.gif border="0">...laws? i like how youseemed to almost "skim over", as you saidin a different topic,thepart about saying people in SC DON'T CARE ABOUT EXHAUST LAWS! the only way to get in trouble is to run open header on a 4-banger (i got a warning with my crx on my way to getting a downpipe installed for a turbo setup <IMG src=smileys/smiley17.gif border="0">)</P><edited><editID>FiveOhNo</editID><editDate>37969.7020717593</editDate></edited>

Dan didn't get owned, sorry. </P>

Dan is right and so is everyone else. He's the deal. Backpressure aids in the prodution of torque. torque is what gets you going, HP is what makes you fast in 1/4. By running a full exhaust this helps keep the torque at a level where people are using it. We don't drive around at 5k on the tach. We run around 2k. The backpressure aids in throttle repsonse and instant acceleration. By dumping the exhaust through the use of cut outs elimnates backpressure almost completely. This means a reduction of torque and poor throttle reponse. But, it increases the top end breathing ability rasing HP, leading to a faster ET. Running cutout on the street all the time not a good idea because of the throttle reponse. Running a cutout on the strip, much better. The use of a Q tech cutout is the best all around option. you can keep it shut for you launches and open it up as you go down track aiding in the ET.</P>

I say try it and if you don't like it or how it sounds then buy some new mufs....

For $60 bucks, I say you can't go wrong. You still actually acheive some sound through your muffler also.
