"The bottom line: Unless you plan on drag racing the car or taking it on weekend autocrosses, the V6 version of the Mustang is a mighty good (and inexpensive) alternative to the Mustang GT. It's got all of the GT's heritage styling (it even comes standard with a set of smart-looking aluminum wheels), without the GT's price premium. If you can resist the temptation to load it up with options, you've got a Mustang that looks like an instant classic at a bargain price. Unlike the mid-1960s Mustangs, however, this one is a helluva lot safer and loads more reliable."
I'm a Mustang guy from the 70's. Owned a 1971 Fastback for a time 30 years ago. I sold it when I got married and I still miss the car.
For my wife's 50th B'Day and Mother's Day weekend we rented a 05 Mustang Convertible from Hertz. It was perfect weather the whole weekend and we had not had that much fun in 30 years while driving a car. I was so surprised at the exhaust note of this car. Subdued yes, but not your typical V-6 drone. It was a very very nice exhaust note and quite pleasent as things go in a convertible.
We put 500 miles on the car in 3 days. This included a romp up to Niagara Falls for an overnight stay there and a trip up the river to hit a few vineyards. This has got to be the perfect car for two people on a road trip! With only 200 miles on it when we picked it up, the V6 delivered plenty of performance for us and returned better than 25 MPG during the time we had it.
My Son and Son-in-Law both took the car out when we returned home from Canada. I told them both that they would be impressed with the V-6. They came back grinning and agreeing with old Dad that yep, the V-6 would do nicely.
I still wonder sometimes if I should have waited on the GT but my dealership would not promise they could deliver one before the 2006's come out. I am impressed every day with how my V6 drives and I get more compliments for other drivers than I could imagine. My current plan is to drive this V6 for two years, give it to my granddaughter for her 16th birthday and buy a new Cobra. For now the V6 does just fine as an everyday car.
I have been completely pleased with my '05 V6. Performance is great... and getting better with a few mods (more on the way, of course) Handles fantastic. For a daily driver, it has all the spirit I need.

Amen! Honestly the GT did not feel that much faster to me than the six, maybe I'm jaded from riding hot rod motorcycles.

Me too. Being an older hot rodder, I've had my share of big blocks running through glass packs or tuned mufflers. I was really surprised at the exhaust note of the V6 (and the performance) when I test drove it, I was expecting there to be no comparison between it and the GT. Really up until the test drives I did not even consider getting a six. But after the drives, I found no compelling reason to get the GT over the six! By the way, the GT muffler is a direct bolt-on swap and the exhaust note gets even better

Before my GT arrived, my dealer loaned me a V6 for a week. I must say that I was impressed how well it ran and handled. Very nice car and plenty of power for most people. Not everyone needs (or wants) the V8; that's cool. That's OK with me. But... truth be told... there is a significant difference between the V6 and the GT.

I have 4 bikes, one of them runs high 10's in the quarter and one is in the 11's. A 14 second car just doesn't impress when you're used to hurtling down the track at an 11 second clip with no steel body around you To you the difference is significant, to me it was nearly nonexistent. I did drive them both back-to-back and luckily had an accommodating salesman. Really I was surprised, as I said before I went into it fully expecting to buy the GT.
I don't have anything against GTs, but I do think it's funny that GT owners think their poo doesn't stink (present company excepted ) There are a lot of faster cars on the road.

Of course there are... but none of them look better than the 05 Stangs!! woohoo!!
BTW, my personal goal for mine is an 11-sec, streetable, daily driver. That will be a nice ride for me. Just keep your friggin 10sec bike away from me!
