I just installed the MAC Induction (shorty) on my V6, installation was easy and had the battery disconnected all night. Took her out this morning and after about 30 miles (no hard driving) the engine light is on. I was hoping I wouldn't have any problems using the intake without a tune since I don't even have 3000 miles on it yet and didn't want to change anything that may impact the warranty. I was under the impression that using the MAC intake would work alright without a tune? I know you won't get the full potential out of the intake without a tune but I was alright with that.
Has anyone out there installed the MAC intake (just the short, no tubing) without a tune and not have their engine light come, and if you did is there a work around without tuning the car? Oh yeah, it looks awesome and have noticed a slight increase in acceleration but nothing dramatic, probably more psychological than actual

the engine light is on becuase the computer is set to a default paramater for the mass air flow sensor i belive..so when it senses a different amount of air coming in it gets confused and hence the check engine light comes on...time for a tune defintally

I had the same problem with my mmr mass intake and like the installation guide said after about 200 miles the engine light finally went off. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Thats right, just ignore it. Hope you have a very understanding dealer that will warranty your engine when you burn a hole in your piston, just ignore it.................Take that useless air intake off your car and throw it in the garbage. Put you old air box back in and drop in a K&N replacement filter and off you go. Forget the reflash also, nobody makes a proven good one yet for the V6 engine.

Gosh, a hole in my piston, do you have a link to some documentation or article that I can read that will give me more information on this, this sounds very serious. You advocate for the K&N drop in, I take you have one installed. Did you notice any performance gains as a result of the K&N?
you have to tune your car (at least you do on the GT for it to run properly). if i understand this properly, the tune will adjust the fuel to air mixture since it is different now that you have a different intake on the car. that is the reason for the engine light to come on. tuning the car will not void the warranty, you can always flash it back to stock before you take it in if you have any problems with it, but it is my understanding from talking with lots of people regarding intakes and tuners for the GT that you have to tune the car to make it run well with the intake. i may be wrong, but i dont think i am...anyone else have any input?
When you installed the high flow intake, your car computer thinks something is wrong since it went from gasping for air to getting whatever it wants. As the computer relearns how to breath again the check engine light goes out.
Thanks for the replies guys. I've been searching forums on this, unfortunately the induction for the V6 is relatively new so I'm getting different feedback. Some are inclined to say it will need to be re-tuned to adjust to the different air flow and I've seen others who claim the car's computer will adjust the mixture to compensate for the new air flow. Has anyone added a MAI to their V6 without a re-tune and had the engine light initially come one and adjust the setting over time to where the light will go out.
rjones have you retuned yours at all, you said your light went out after 200 miles?

I haven't retuned and the cars running great, it semeed like it took a couple miles to figure itself out. I plan on a retune after finishing up my mods but I don't want to void the warranty just yet.
Everyone I have talked to (including several performance shops) say that if you don't tune it the engine light will go away but the computer will have tuned it self down and you won't get much if any performance out of your mod but it will run fine. I've heard of cases where people actually lost power because the comp retuned itself.

Thanks for the input guys, I've decided to take it out until I get it tuned properly. Called a few performance shops here in San Diego and thinking of getting it dyno'd and tuned and have the shop make me a chip. Damn dyno's are expensive, the other alternative is to wait a bit and see what pre-fab tunes come out for the V6 and MAC straight shot. I've always babied my cars and driving with the engine light on bugs the hell out of me, chances are probably slim that the extra air leaned out the mix enough to cause serious damage but I don't want to risk it.
Was looking at the excal-2 looks pretty straight forward, something I could hande. I'm new to all this, alot better at modding computers, but wouldn't I get better performance gains by having a shop dyno and custom tune it to my vehicle?
probably but I don't know if it would be enough to justify the extra $ your gonna spend. To me it probably wouldn't but it's your $. I'd rather spend the $ on other things for my car
