All you american thunder guys should try the original flows by flowmaster. They are the ones guys ran in the 60's. I love a loud car that sounds awesome, as it seems we all like exercising our american made power sounds. In consideration of this, i thought it would be a good idea to put a set of cutouts under the car before the fm's giving it a straight open pipe design. I thought it would help the car perform a little better at the drag strip since all the big block & carb guys do it. It was fun to make a little noise on the street now and then but all and all it DID hurt performance. I felt like i was driving a 302 fairmont compared to with the exhaust goin through the mufflers. I'd recommend a muffler that gives you at least a little back pressure with sound. If you can do 3" pipes, go for it. I have 2.5's on mine now but would love 3's.

Has anyone tried using glass packs on their 5.0? I am talking about smittys, cherry bombs etc. I am looking for a nice deep tone. tbirdtrbo37972.6209259259
I have the Dynomax Super Turbo on mine. I also have Dynomax High Flow cats. It has a really deep rumble, it sounds really healthy.
My bummer with it is with a frequency that resonates throughout the cabin at 2000 rpm. This is 80 MPH in 5th gear. You can't hold a conversation in the car. Really annoying on a 1 hour+ freeway ride.
Is there a website where you can hear different exhaust sounds?
BACKPRESSURE is your enemy! You do not want any back pressure.I hear people say this all the time and its BULLSH*T backpressure is not healthy for a motor it causes a restriction is the exhaust which cuts horsepower. The whole backpressure misconception came when the smog patrol went in effect. Why do you see so many removing the catylatic convertors from their setups?Because theyre big restrictors.Mufflers do one thing MUFFLE sounds. It cuts down on noise pollution.
On a daily driver yeah just to be considerate of my neighbors i'd probably run some sort of a muffler but on a car setup for performance only like my 89 i wont run anything but headers on open pipes.I had catylatic convertors and glass packs (and countless other mufflers) on it when i first finished the swap and i noticed a huge gain throught out the whole rpm range when i switched over to a set of open headers and straight pipes.I ran mine down and out to just before the rear axle and then put turndowns on it it not only sounds great but best of all it definately helped it out.My neighbors piss and moan in the summer time at night but hey F**K'em.

So what you are saying is that if my friend jumps of a bridge then I should because it is good idea? Removing the cats is not always a good thing.
This whole backpressure argument is usless. Thick headed people don't understand. backpressure aids in producing torque. No backpressure raises HP. If you spend your time up in the high rpm bands then you don't need backpressure. If you are like most of us and run low in the rpm band then you need some backpressure to have a decent throttle response. I am not saying run with a banana up the tail pipe so you raise you back pressure but some IS GOOD!
People remove there cat's to gain HP. This is good for drag racing bad for around town driving. I have many a friend that have removed the cats from the rides and lost torque and gained 1HP. They ran slower at the track. Put the cats back and there track times went back to were they were.
Not every muffler elminates backpressure, just look at flowmasters. If you like open pipes then run them. I personally think it sounds like a$$.
you don't want to run cats then don't run them. Believe what you want. But back pressure is a good thing. And it doesn't hurt motors. Imports need some backpressure to aid in scavaging or risk burning the valves. So I guess I can say that no backpressure is your enemy!

werd! that is why they suggest that you dont put 3" exhausts on engines with < 400 hp. you need backpressure to put down torque. you might get more hp on the dyno, but you will loose everywhere else. now on the otherhand you can have too much backpressue, but you need a lot of hp and a tiny exhaust to do it.
But i have to bring up the part about imports and burning valves and say THATS TOTAL s**t!First you would need to run with no manifold or header to burn a valve. And second who compares a mustang to an import.

I wasn't comparing Imports to Mustangs. I just mearly stating that back pressure is good. Don't tell me you can't burn valves on an import either. I've done it. Had to put the cat's back on to alieveate the problem. I'll run how I want and you'll run how you want. But don't misinform people with your personal beliefs.

i can also contribute to the whole "burning valves on an import"...i ruined my B16 CRX ...got me an LS now...but this is a mustang forum i guess...but i'm just saying, on an import running open headers is baaad. on a mustang, i know you lose a lot of tq, it also sounded like a$$ on mine.
These arent oppinions. And if imports are that s**tty that you can burn a valve that easy im glad i dont own one and pitty all of you who do!
And i still stand by what i said on a 5.0 (i dont know about these s**tty imports i like real cars) it would take running no exhaust what so ever including manifolds or headers to burn out a valve unless you have a vacuum leak.By the way all of you burning valves on these 5.0's by any chance are you deleting smog equipment as well including the air pump?If so are you blocking those passages off at the back of the heads? If not theres your problem.
Another point i'd like to bring up if open headers are so bad why are TUNED HEADERS so popular?Does anyone know how they tune headers?Well let me tell you they smear a line of grease down the exhaust pipe and make a pass down the track with it and where the grease stops burning is where they cut the pipe and put a turndown on it.
I dont think you were burning valves due to only having open headers i think theres more to the story than is being told.I've built many motors and have yet to burn a valve but of course these were real motors not wind up toys so hey you may have had problems with your rubber band car who knowes.
These are not my OPINIONS these are facts go take a look around at these other forums and ask around.

as my sig says, imports suck (that is focused on Japanese cars, i have respect for german cars. but IMO all japanese cars suck, excluding the Supras). 2 liters should be the size of a soda bottle, not an engine.
