Default Noob question! Sorry!

I seriousely don't know this question - When you check your coolant level (2000 Mustang GT) You know the plastic cover for the radiator and the box-like resevior that has a little line that says "add coolant"? WHEN DO YOU CHECK THAT?? I check it when everything has been off for like 4 hours and its far below the line.. but right after I shut off the car it's smack on the line. Is there like some other place to check the radiator coolant as well?

The one you are talking about is the cold line. Yes you check that when the engine has had enough time to cool off...so you need to add some coolant to bring it up to that line when the engine has had time to cool down.

How much water should I add? And how much coolant should I add? What do you reccomend for coolant brand? Is it a problem that it has been low for about 200 or 300 miles? I know i'm an idiot for running it with my thermostat gauge also being broken [:'(]... but.... last time the car was serviced (2,000 miles ago) Ford said the car was running at optimum temperature. I need to get that freakin gauge fixed.

...well that depends on how far below the line it is. If it is not very much below the line...it shouldn't take much. I think you would be fine by just adding water...unless thereservoir is pretty much empty then you might want to do a 50/50 mix.

If the coolant has not been changed before you might want to use ford's brand of coolant? I read somewhere they use a special type of coolant that doesn't mix well with other coolants? I am not sure if that is true or not but I remember reading that somewhere. Maybe someone else has an opinion on that? It might not matter but unless it was seriously low I wouldn't think it would cause to much of a problem...though without fluid...air occupies that space and you may have introduced some air into your cooling system which is not as efficent to removing the heatasthe fluid that is suppose to be circulating thru the system.

+1 on getting that guage fixed. If you're really concerned about knowing what the temperature of your engine is just add an aftermarket guage. They will give you a better idea of the temps than the stock unit. It isn't a dummy guage like the oil guage is but I myself like to know numbers...not a position on the dial.

When I bought the car the gauge didnt work.. Ford tested the temperature and it read out perfect. I'm thinkin... thermostat? There is an aftermarket set of steeda white face gauges installed in the dash.. but I think everything is hooked up right because the gauge is functional.. just WAY off.. lol. WhenI start the car the gauge risesgraudually to allll the way over to the right.

As long as you know the engine wasn't overheating then you might have a sensor problem. There is a certain resistance range they are suppose to be in and if they go bad they will read erractic like that.

Also was wondering if the person had to take the dials off to install those and after they put them back on...they didn't set them on there right?

If you think it is your thermostat put your hand on the upper top radiator hose while the car is running. When it warms up it should get real hot to the touch andalso bevery resistent when you squeeze it because of the pressure in the system. If it is barely warm to the touch and you can squeeze it with easethen you might havea stuck closedthermostat. If it is stuck open then the hose will gradually getwarm to hot with the touchbut take much longer as the coolantis always circulating.
