Default gas mileage

I am having some serious gas mileage problems in my 2000 GT. My last couple of full tanks have gotten me about 215-220 miles. With a fill up being 13.5 gallons usually that means im getting under 16 mpg. This is me absolutley babying the car. I have been shifting at or under 2k rpm. I changed the filter about 3 monthes ago and changed the fuel filter about 6 monthes ago. I have heard of new edge gt getting around 300 miles out of a tank of gas. Being in college with not alot of money i would really like to figure out what i can do to better my mpg's. Any suggestions. The car has 78,000 miles and a bbk intake and flowmaster cat back. Any help would be REALLY appreciated..THanks

when was the last time you ran some injector cleaner through the system? changed your plugs recently?
i had a similar issue with my 99cougar (yeah i know, dont hate on it) turned out the injectors were just really dirty and needed a good cleaning.
thought i would throw out cheap ideas first.

i appreciate the advice. I have tried the injector cleaner before and didnt get a difference i could actually notice. I have yet to change the plugs in the two years i have owned the car. Is it hard to change the plugs.?? With 78K on the clock is this something that needs to be done?? Any other thoughts??

plugs are good idea, o2 sensors maybe even if there is no CEL. Injector cleaning like previously stated, and i know I have seen some people on here have a bad COP but it didn't throw the CEL, has the car been running well? Also have you checked to see if you are leaking gas?

very easy to change plugs... just need a socket wrench and the correct socket, pick up a haynes repair manual or something, its one of the first things i ever learned how to do, just dont overtighten the plugs when you put them back in, and make sure there going in stright, if it gets difficult to put the plug back in when you have just started, its most likely crossthreaded, simply back it out and try to strighten it, dont try to muscle your way through it, its a good way to strip threads in your aluminum head, im pretty sure you have only 4 threads holding the sparkplug in so becareful! they should be snug but not overtight, a repair manual will probably tell you the exact amount of torque required, i just do it by feel. But my suggestion again would be to pick up a haynes repair manual or something from ur local autoparts store, it should have a step by step, ive never actually looked when it came to sparkplugs, dad taught me a while back, but i do reccomend changing the plugs, if this doesn't work you might wan't to hand clean your fuel injectors, again a repair manual should be able to walk you through it, it may be under "replacing fuel injectors" or something but just clean them and stick em back in as if they were new,I had a miss in my car and was getting horrible gas milage, i replaced Sparkplugs AND wires and the miss was gone and my fuel economy was back, wires get a little more tricky but are still not impossible for a rookie.

I have a 03 GT and I can tell you the way you drive is a big factor. I'm just as concerned with gas a you are. If I'd of known gas was going to go so high then I would have held out on buying it for later. Fact of the matter is that I do have one so I need to make the best of what I have. I can tell you that I personally get on average about 18mpg city. Basically I baby the car.
1st gear 0-10
2nd gear 10-20
3rd gear 20-30
4th gear 30-40
5th gear 40 and I try to get to around 55-60mph

Using this method is how I achieved my gas milage. I have basically the same mods like you just that I also have long tube headers. Hopefully my info has helped you to save a little more on gas. I know V-8's are gas lovers and they tease you when you hit the gas which temps you to stomp on it. It's hard to resist but when I see that needle drop and the gas so high there's definately some sense that get's knocked into me. It's almost like if my car could talk to me we'd talk like this......

Me: Nice Pony. Just sip gas.
Mustang: BUT I'M HUNGRY!!!!!!

The way you drive is the biggest factor in gas mileage by far. But if you are really getting that low of mileage babying the car, then you have something else going on. I get like 250 miles to a tank but I have lots of **** done including a blower, cams, 4.10s, and a heavy foot. Granted about half of these miles are on the freeway.
