my 235/17s pirellis still have a bit of life on them yet but id rather start looking now to see if i can find any good deals on tires as opposed to having to buy whatever when the time comes.
im plannng on keeping my rims (unless i find a set w/rims for a fantastic price...) and wanted to beef up my rear tires a bit. what size tire would be safe to launch with, that arent going to eventually snap my rear end?
ive seen some people with 305s/315s with a stock rear end.... but is their RE on borrowed time?
I wasn't sure you could go 275 on a nine inch rim width (esp a 17in rim). Then again I have a 265 on an 8.5 inch rim width so the 275s should work but still not sure if they offer it in the 17 inch rim size.(I have 20" rims)

im looking at the nitto555 275/40/17s.... says tire width fits a 9 wheel. so this should be fine for me? also - are the nittos really that much more durable than a toyo or anything else in a similar price range?
or are about 275s the biggest i can do with a 17x9 rim anyway?
Make sure that you are making the correct measurement for wheel width. Wheel widths are measured inside the wheel flanges where the tire beads seat, NOT outside the flanges. Wheel width as used for tire choice is about an inch less than theoutside measurement.
Stock 17" rims are 8" wide.
Anyway, the maximum tire size depends on the tire profile. For 17 x 8,
255/45 is OK
275/50 is apparently OK (Nitto 450"s, not much other choice that I could find) 275/40 is notOK
