Lets be honest for a sec. - Mechanical Ability
Okay, so, after reading alot of the Tech advice on here I want some honest answers. If we get enough (of the right) people this could get interesting.
Rate your mechanical ability/knowledge on a 0-10 scale. 0 being I cannot identify a single thing in an engine bay; 10 being if I cannot fix it, it isnt salvageable by anybody.
0 - I dont know anything about cars mechanically or in the general sense of the word
1 - Check Engine Light comes on; car still runs. I check it on the forums or at an auto parts store/shop
2 - Check Engine Light comes on; car still runs. I attempt to diagnose myself.
3 - Check Engine Light comes on; car acting weird. I take it to a shop.
4 - Check Engine Light comes on; car acting weird. I attempt to make a small repair. (Change a fuse or a small sensor.)
5 - Basic engine knowledge. Ability to top fluids, change wiper blades, small fixes, and check car for larger things to be replaced by mechanic.
6 - Everything from #5 plus the ability to change your own oil, perform regular maintenance, and basic modding. (CAI, easy bolt-ons, etc.
7 - #5 & #6 plus a working mechanical knowledge of a motor platform. Can do things like changing head gaskets, gears, and welding.
8 - I know pretty much everything about ONE certain motor platform (i.e. - Modular or LSx) including mechanical & performance.
9 - I know MULTIPLE motor platforms and know advanced performance aspects (tuning with stand-alone software, motor combinations)
10 - If I cant make it work, it cant be done. PERIOD.
