Default Advice needed on new tv

So im in the market for a new flat screen tv. Ive come down totwo different32" samsungs. One has 8,000:1 contrast ratio the other 10,000:1. The 10,000 is $750 and the other is $650. I was talking to a guy a best buy today and turns out that he is my neighbor. He says that he would sell me his 42" plasma samsung for $700. Sounds like an excellent deal to me. Im going check it out tonite but im told that its mint condition. Im not totally sure on all the specs but the thing is its an 06 model i think. My question is how long does a plasma screen last on average? Which deal should I go with?

Have you tried going to Circuit City or Best Buys' Web Sites? Both have reader reviews on TVs. Might be worth looking at to see if any of those models have any drawbacks, strengths, or weaknesses.

DONT BUY A USED FLAT SCREEN!
the lifetime of these things are based on # of hours of usage (lika an airplane engine). after x number of hours they WILL
die on you. even a brandspanking new one. i sold these for 2 years and they averaged 5-7 years NEW depending on how
hard you ran them. ALSO remember that you need HD to get the ultra clear image (MANY people don't realize this)

Another thing to keep in mind. If you buy your TV at most stores, they have a 30 day return policy (I have definitely taken advantage of that). Will yourneighbor take back his plasma, if you decide you are not happy with it? Is there a warranty on the plasma?

If something happens to a TV you buy at the store, you can usually get a brand new one within those 30 days. You will certainly not get that when buying from your neighbor

I do understand the temptation toget 42" of HDTV instead of 32" of HDTV though. Why does your neighbor want to get rid of the plasma?

Yea ive been to each store like 3 times and talked to 3 different people (this is a big deal to me. I want all the info i can) They say there all good tv's and samsung i know is a good brand. Im just not familiar with plasma or an older model. I didnt have much time to talk about it with him because he had customers. But hes going to pull up the information online when he gets off

Get a brand new TV, do not buy his. Sure it is bigger, but as others have said, it is a crap-shoot.

I am assuming these are 720p Televisions, and not 1080p ones, given the prices quoted. If you have the extra cash, get the 1080p.

rule of thumb, anything 37in and under, you cant tell the difference between 720 and 1080. anything above 37in, you can.

if is 42in is 720p, its not worth it.

samsung has the best tv's, by far. next time your at best buy, catch a glimpse at their new 150k:1 contrast ratio tv. its unbelievable. walked in there with a couple friends, we looked over at the tvs and all three of us said, wow, at the same time.

its also like 5grand lol

Just wanted to say thanks for the help guys. I took your advice and from others and decided to do this right. I went with a 40" Samsung 1080p with 120Hz LCD. With the price of this one i could take advatage of the 18month no interest. Should be picking it up tomorrow. Im really excited
