Default v-6 choices in a 93 vert

Ok Before someone gets upset over a 4 banger in the v-6 section. This is not about my 89 turbo. I am building a 93 vert. I am changing the dash, interior, and exterior trim to match a 86. I didn't want 2 white mustangs the same. All choices must be automatic. I know but wife's car. I have choices of motors in my thoughts, 3.8 v-6 from later model Mustang, 4.0 ohc from later Mustang or Explorer [ unsure if will fit] , a 3.8 supercharged from a supercoupe, or SHO and aerostar automatic. All motors have been located at a reasonable pricel. Wiring is not a problem for me. Fabrication is not either to a point. Not a mechinist. If anyone has links, pictures or knowledge please speak up. Here is link to photobucket with pictures. I know I got some body work to do but at least it is rust free. Thanks alot Maurice

Default RE: v-6 choices in a 93 vert

I might be able to help a little on this one.
I looked at swapping a 2000 V6 into my old 90 5.0L hatch. I learned a few things along the way. The 4.0L SOHC will not fit without a lot of custom work, and custom made motor mounts. However, the 3.8L/4.2L block fits right in. The biggest headache was going to be wiring it in. The motor harness isnt' so bad, but to get the dash to work right, there was a LOT of cut and splice.
There are only 2 fox cars that have pulled this off. One is the Super Six 88 coupe which started as a 4 banger. They run a 4.3L split port motor. The other is a gut on V6power who used a Super Coupe block, and feeds it with a custom TT set up in a red coupe. I have his email address somewhere I'll have to dig it out and PM you later.
I had to sell my fox after leaving my job - but I'm in the process of picking up an 82 GT right now that was a factory optioned racer (none of the power options, no radio, no A/C etc....). It's going to get a V6 in place of the 150 hp 5.0L when I buy it. I think I'm doing aturbo V6 with a blow through carb set upthough to save the hassles of wiring in the new computer and all the fuel injection crap. A Super Coupe swap would be my first choice if I had the time to do it.

^How can you fit a 385 series V8(AKA big block 429/460) in a fox-body mustang with absolutely no cutting and very minor changes, but you cant fit a 4.0L Cologne V6 in between the shock towers?

Size wise, it will fit, there is just no way to mount it due to location of the motor mounts on the block vs where they line up with the K member. You'd also need to adjust for the location of the shifter once the tranny was mounted, and a custom drive shaft. It would take a few grand in welding and frame mods to get it to work. With all that cost, you could have a much faster 3.8L/4.2L instead.

On the 4.0 ohc. I know I would have to make custom motor mounts and trans. Since automatic I assume can use cable shifter. Unless it is a electrically shifted. My worry is the oil pan versus crossmember and height. Been thru this already when I done the mockup of a 2.3 turbo in a MGB. Now apart for rusty panel replacement. But that is not reason for this post. Man that owns the 3.8 supercoupe is on vacation this week. Will know more next week when he is back. I purchaseable at a reasonable price that is what I am doing. As far as wiring. No problem I am using the 86 turbocoupe wiring with autometer gauges on the MGB project. That wasn't a challenge at all. Thanks for all the input and please keep it coming. Thanks again Maurice

I would go with a 3.8/4.2 personally. as matt said, easier to fit, and have a pretty decent following. the supercoupe is a great idea, and would be most kick ass.

2nd choice, look into a 4.2 splitport. they produce something like 200/250 stock, which is decent in such a light car.

cant wait to see this project!

I have alot of respect for the 3.8 v-6 and the owners got to take a ride in a turbo v-6. Impressive to say the least. He was presently at 3psi boost. After tuning dad said to 15 wow. Went to his place to diner, party and fireworks last night. His son has a the turbov-6, dad has nitrous v-6 also. They are going to BowlingGreen Ky to drag race today. Darn had to be on call for work otherwise I would have gone also. If interested will keep all informed on the buildup. Won't be a drag car. But I think it will be nice and differant. Which is me.
