With the cost of gas and newhigh HP tuners. The time may be right for a high output four banger Mustang like the SVO.
I'm normally a V-8 guy, But I would love to see a mustang
take on some of these Hondas and Toyotas, and get good mpgs to.
What do you think?
Ugh. I couldn't buy one. The 80's SVO was okay since the fox was so small, but not now...
If people want really good mileage, don't buy a sports car. Now a decent 6cyl, I'd be fine with but a 4... eh not so much.
4 cylinders does not necessarily mean good gas mileage either. According to http://www.fueleconomy.gov, a 2008 Corvette gets 16 city, 26 highway with it's 6.2L V8. A Honda S2000 gets 18 city and 25 highway. 08 Evo? 17/22. 08 Sti? 17/23
Going fast requires gas, no matter what kind of engine you've got.

No, you probably won't be seeing a 4 banger Mustang anytime soon......or ever, really. We would probably see Ford axe the Mustang altogether before things got to the point where a 4 banger Stang was needed.
But, it's looking pretty good for that twin turbo ecoboost sixxer. 330-345 hp with tons of tuning potential. Even the proposed 5.0 OHC V8 could have its work cut out for it with those little ponies running around.
I think it would be a very good idea for Ford to have a boasted 4 in the lineup. Not to say that Ford should stop making a V8 but a bunch of 4's would really help raise Ford's fleet mpg's which will need to be required.

I have two friends with Mazdaspeed3's that average 24mpg with 50/50 city/highway driving.
If the Stang receives a 4cyl , it will be front wheel drive (one wheel peel). Who the hell would buy a FWD 4cyl Stang! If gas prices keep going up, I will be forced to buy a civic & will easily give up the V8 (passion). Due to gas prices, I was reticent when buying my S197.I believe gas will come down to a reasonable level, once the bubble pops.
