Default 71 heater core removal

Okay, new guy here, followed the basic instructions for heater box removal, and I still can't get the darn thing out. Do I need to remove the center dash panel? The heater box is loose, cables and wires disconnected, but it seems too long to come out witout some more clearance. The instructions I've been following aren't very specific.

are you talking about the controls or the actual box itself? sometimes people say one and mean the other. to get the box out it may just be easier to just loosen or even remove the entire dash. The controls should just slide out once you take off the bezel and panel that runs down the center of the dash.

Removing the heater/AC box on '69 and up cars is not a fun job. That sucker fits in there so tight, you'd swear it'll never come out, but it will. Remove everything that's even close to the box to gain more room. It'll need to be twisted and tilted to come out, but it will eventually come out. Keep playing with it.

AC Drain line disconnected?

thanks for the replys, guys. It is the heater box, non-ac, so I figure it can't be too hard! HaHa! You're right, that sucker is in there tight and there doesn't appear to be much room to manuever. I removed thefloor console thinking I'd gain a little clearance, but still no go. Next will be the center console, I guess.

I changed the heater core in mine without pulling the heater box all the way out. You can't see what you are doing on the back side of the box, you have to go by feel. It can be done. The hardest thing to do was putting the new one back in with the foam around it. I used a little silicone on the foam to hold it in place and let it dry for a while.

I didn't want to take the dash apart.
