'67 200 straight 6
The engine sputters when accelerating but seems to run better when I let off the gas. I just changed plugs, wires, fuel filter, new gas tank, air filter and adjusted the timing. Any thoughts?

Also, how can I tell what kind of carbereutor I have?

sounds like you just need a tune. Check for any vacume leaks though, that could do it.. take a picture of the carb and post it(without air cleaner) and someone will ID it for you..

Thanks, what else would I do for a tune? I did timing, and all. Anyway, I think the whole vacuum system is shot as the heater system bypasses the valve that is suppose to be hooked into the vac canister but is not. It is just kind of sitting there. How can you tell if the vac canister needs replaced?

I see you replaced the fuel filter and tank. Was there any particular reason (i.e. were they gunked up)? If so, perhaps your fuel lines need replacing, too. Also, check to see if your accelerator pump is workingnext time you have the air cleaner off. I'm guessing its a fuel starvation issue.

I guess I should ask if it is sputtering the entire time it is rev-ing higher than idle, or just stumbling off idle?

+1 on the possible fuel line and/or carb issue on this one. Chances are the carb is an autolite 1100 (same as mine). Carb prob needs cleaning/rebuilt. rebuild kits are about $20 at autozone and once the carb is clean you need to adjust it using the two screws on the carb (search this forum for carb tuning procedure). Keep us posted on your progress....

Thank you so much guys! Ok, it idles fine, well slightly rough but not noticably. But when I give it gas it gives me all kinds of fits. If I back off the gas it settles down and if I can get it rolling and not much gas it does better. Once I drive it for 10 minutes or so it seems to do better but there is still a sputter.

I am leaning toward the carb and this is uncharted territory for me. I will look for the forum and pull out the Chiltons. I think my vacuum system is all goofed up too as the vacuum canister only has one hose attached to it. Would that play that much havoc on it?

Thanks again. I will post a pic of the carb tonight but am thinking that you are right. It is all stock whatever it is.

How would I know if it is lean or rich?

The accelerator pump diaphragm may have a hole in it.

where is the accelerator pump/diaphragm? Will that get replaced in a carb rebuild or do I need to order another part too?
