I'm going to need a tune for the cam that I'm getting and Justin from VMP said that he can do this without me getting a wideband. Will the tune be decent?
This is straight off my tuners website, I'll let you decide:
" We stress that wideband air fuel data is required for tuning all vehicles with major modifications and we will not tune high performance combos without wideband data. Beware of any tuners that will attempt to email tune your high performance combo without wideband data. Its just not safe! It would seem that the same exact car, with the same exact mods, would take the same exact tune, but that it not always the case due to production tolerances, maf orientation, etc. "
Obviously, a dynotune is the best way to go, but personally, I'd trust a mailed tune from Justin over a dynotune from just about anyone else.
After my heads/cam swap, it took quite a bit of care just to get the car to Justin's shop without significant misfiring and the resulting flashing SES light. Since he tuned it, the stumbling is gone and the car makes more power than any heads/cam/CAI/exhaust car that I personally know of... and it gets 27mpg in mixed driving. Given the mods and situation, I couldn't have asked for more.
All that being said... if Justin says he can tune it without wideband, I wouldn't be worried about trying it. Will he nail it the first time? Maybe not... but he's knowledgeable enough to get it close and go from there, IMO.
