So here is my issue I have a 84 mustang it turns over but won't stay started, it seems like it doesnt really start at all. New battery..

The car died before winter hit and I jumped started the car and it blew i think i fried the battery when i did that also the cables were not done right, the black was where the red was supposed to be and red where black was supposed to be... fixed that, i take starter fluid and put it in the engine then try to start and even plug the battery up but nothing.... headlights and tail lights work. there is gas in the car, we took starter fluid and tried that plus we put some gas (very small ammount) put it down the breather, it started for a bit but went off..

any suggestions? yes an 84 is not the best year for a mustang but hey this car was treated horribly by the old owner and i atleast want to give it life again, shame to see any mustang die no matter its age or looks!

see im not a pro at fixing cars this 84 was going to be the car i re built pretty much, it don't look like a mustang, the old owner changed the rims (****ty rims now) emblems are gone, top is kinda still good, it dont even look like a mustang but when im done with it, people will smile! i dont like auto for mustangs but hey what can ya do, maybe change out the trany and convert it to a manual if thats even possible...

but bare with my im no machanic with cars so ill try and do my best with things that you suggest if ya can give info and what not

anyhow we stuck a lil bit of gas down the breather yesterday and it started for a few secs then went off...

question cfi = ?

haha 192k... my ford tauras (97) had 267k on it and still ran, thats one thing about ford you can put crap loads of miles on them and they still run...

first thing you need to find out is are you getting fuel to that throttle body? while some trys starting it have them pump the gas see if its squirting in there or not you will probably smell the gas before seeing it. if nothing spray some eather in there while someone is trying to start it at the same time not a whole lot just to see if you can get it to run or not. you can keep spraying bursts into it and it will keep the car running and if thats the case you gotta find out why its not getting fuel most likely the fuel pump.

'84 is 'old'
Good........
It's one of the rare breed called '4-eye'
Be glad you got an '84 with a carb, fuel systems are much less $$ to fix..........

he might be if that were the case but it's not..it's cfi if you read the whole thread
anyway to the OP...on top of the throttle boby where the injectors are there is a shreador valve / fuel pressure test port...put a gauge on it and test the fuel pressure when you turn key on it should power the pump up briefly and indicate pump action / pressure...if it doesn't fuel pump circuit needs to be troubleshot.........check fues box first for any blown fuses..but my gues is since the fuel pump draws it's current directly off the selonoid through a relay..you may have shorted one or the other when battery was hooked up backwards....the wires to the selonoid for fuel pump action on the fender mount selonoid should be on an eyelet black and blue wire at least it was on my 85 cfi stang........check the fuel pump relay under drivers seat..it may have gotten fried

Well we went ahead and tested a lot and checked to see if wires were fried.. They all seem to be fine, the old owner did some modifications and took short cuts doing so... We think its some thing to do with the pump and starter but not sure

trust me I learned more than I care to know about the cfi!!..when I first bought it I didn't think it was much slower than a carbed one until I rebuilt it all with a cam, roller rockers ported head..performer 302 with 2 barrel egr plate, fulll exhaust and 2000 stall and 3.73's with an aod....and my bro's stock 86 gt spanked my ace!!!.......that cfi stands for crappy fuel injection..no way to tune it......so I heaved it and converted to 4 barrel and went from a 15.4 in the 1/4 mile immediately to 13.70's

We are going to try and take a 12gage wire from starter to the gas and see if that would work...

and ignite it??? wtf???   your doing it all wrong..I told you where to start....the wires that power the relay under the seat.....is on an eyelet on the starter selonoid= I believe a blue and black wire and I believe that bridges into a fusible link that you may have toasted..and the relay is under the seat....hint hint..may have fried it...and in the behind the left tail light is the fuel pump reset/collision trip black box..check all this....the system in that car is simple and if you understand what it consists of and where all components are then you can figure the prob out...and dont you dare apply 12 volts directly onto the injectors..do what I said and you can resolve issue......a test light will help you locate some probs

we took a test lighty thingy (what ever its called) tested wires and what not it gave us red lights for almost everything except for the wire that goes from the starter cilinoid to the pump, that wire was tosted and we were going to replace that wire... i will try this tomorrow what you have stated before i go ahead with the idea that the guy said he feels it is... there is no noise when we turn the car into on position he said normally there should be a gas noise of some shorts, also there was 100% no gas coming up into the car it seemed like but we kept turning it over when we pushed gas in manually through the breather but it just shut off

where is this "and in the behind the left tail light is the fuel pump reset/collision trip black box"

I did not see this where is in by, inside trunk?

its got a big red button on top of it. its called an enertia switch. if you smack it with your hand you can trip it thats how sensitive it is. we play games on each other at the dealer here. we go around and smack the quarter panels where the switch is and trip them so when the other guys go to start the car it wont run and they have to figure out why its lots of fun lol
