My 1989 mustang 5.0 engine blew . Bought a 1995 5.0 to replace it . Everything is done ... last step : add oil and coolant . Filled the radiator ... and a HUGE leak came between the water pump and the timing cover . Removed the water pump , replaced the gasket , put it all back together , same leak . Removed the water pump AGAIN , replace the gasket AGAIN and this time , put a LOT of RTV .
Wait 2 hour ... put water on the radiator ... same thing...HUGE LEAK .... so I thought it was maybe a water pump problem (the guy how sold me the engine gave me this water pump)
Took from my old engine the water pump (was replaced 8 month ago) and the timing cover .... new gaskets ...LOT of rtv ... and again .... HUGE LEAK ....always from the same place , under the bolt ....the arrow on the pic ....
Please help ...I'll soak the inside of the car with fuel and light it up if it continues like that ... [:@]
I put a 5.0 engine out of a 94 in my 92 LX. I know the waterpumps on the later 5.0's had different bolt pattern. When I compared the two waterpumps it seemed as though there was an extra bolt on the newer waterpump. I think, on the older pumps the impeller was exposed and on the newer pump it had a metal cover. I hope this helps, maybe someone here can confirm what I have described.
are you sure that when you install the long bolts that there actually getting tight against the water pump? ford small blocks are notorious for getting corrosion buildup in the holes with the long bolts, maybe the bolts are bottoming out on the corrosion and not actually getting tight. just a thought, and just to be sure, this is the setup you have right? the water pump, next is a gasket then a steel backing plate that is bolted to the back of the pump, then another gasket that goes against the timing chain cover.
Yes . this is exactly the set up . water pump - gasket - metal plate with 2 bolts - gasket - timing cover- timing cover gasket - block .
Always leak at the same place . What dave1170 said could be a clue?? I know the 1995 has a different water pump .... but the block's casting is the came I think . The 1989 timing cover and water pump fits bolts-on ....
I know 94-95 have standard pumps where the foxes have reverse rotatation pumps, which one are you using

OH! I did'nt knew that . I tried with the pump someone gave to me (what year ..I don't know) but the pump is identical to my 1989 water pump ... I tried both ... both are leaking .....
The leaking happens right away , no need to stard the engine .... just put some water in tha radiator and it will leak instantly , no pressure at all !
to use a 95 engine in a fox body the timing cover and water pump from the fox body must be used on the block..sn-95 water pumps and timing covers are different
Well , the last set-up I did was that : The 1995 block + 1989 timing cover + 1989 water pump ... and It leaks right away , as I said , no need to turn the engine , leaks right away from always the same place...
then run a straight edge across it and are you sure you have the backing plate on the water pump flipped the right way??
You mean the plate behing the water pump? Maybe I'm wrong , but there is only one way to fit it .... the 3 other ways (up side down - left ans right) , the bolds do not fits . And every times I changed the gasket between the plate and the water pump [:@]
