ok, first question, im having a hard time deciding if i want to get a new saleen or a new corvette... i know saleens hold there value a little better since they are numberd and are also cheaper to upgrade, does anyone here have any more reasons why one would be a better choice over the other? (i realize the opinions will be a little favored toward the saleen since im on a saleen forum but oh well)
also, if i do go with the saleen, is there any reasson why i should get a supercharged saleen over getting a non supercharged one and then just putting on a supercharger myslef? and if i do supercharge it myself what price should i expect to pay to install something like a vortec or even a saleen charger? would i need to get anything else that would not come with the kit? fuel rails? pullys? intake? what about the price and install of turbo kits?
thanks for all the help in advance, as you can tell im a newbie this stuff

Well, the Corvette definitely has it over the Saleen in the "bang for the buck" category. It's lighter, handles better, and is cheaper. The standard 430hp Corvette will out-corner and handily outrun all but the most expertly-driven supercharged Saleen Mustangs. If you don't have a Saleen dealer close by, the Corvette's easier to maintain (everyone has a Chevy dealer close by), and it's probably somewhat more reliable.
I say this as someone who spent enough on a Saleen to easily pay for a 500hp Z06 Corvette optioned out to my specs. So why did I do it?
Well, the Corvette's an American icon, and a lot of people recognize that bang for the buck. So there are an awful lot of Corvettes out there. And while the Corvette is faster, a supercharged Saleen is still a damn fast car; you won't notice the performance difference unless you're competing against a Corvette at the track. And I hardly ever do that.
The truncated back seat is occasionally useful, and the uniqueness of the car is appealing. Saleen just doesn't make very many cars: it's an exclusive club, and I'm shallow enough for that to mean something to me. The style of the thing has it all over the Corvette, IMO.
Being one that sold my 03 Z06 to purchase an 06 Saleen SC, I am not looking back at all. I also think the new stock Vette cna slightly edge out the Saleen SC, BUT......If you do some inexpensive mods such as a JDM stage II kit (pulley, MAF, Tune etc) it will not be so closeuntil you get to the corners where the Vette will prevail.
I can say this,. I had the Z06 for almost a year, and a half. I did get a few people say "nice car", but it is no comparison to the Saleen. Everywhere I go I get into conversations about it. Gas stations, a car wash, shopping, wherever! So if you want something that is competitive in speed, but will make you much more elite, go with the Saleen. That back seat does help me a lot too. It is not my daily driver, but it does get used to bring my 2.5 year old to granny house on weekends!
Both are great cars, and I do not think you can make a bad decision. Good luck, and keep us posted.
Well I 've driven Corvettes myself, and a Mustang GT, properly lowered and fit out with a complete suspension upgrade, meaning the xtra goodies from BMR and Steeda, on top of what is considered a standard performance, in these forums, corners pretty darn close to the standard Corvette from my experience. Certainly after 120 mph, the Corvettes aero dynamics can only be matched by the worlds top supercars. Erik
This whole Vette vs. Saleen thing should be a sticky!
As a Saleen owner who walked into a Chevy dealership with checkbook in hand ready to buy a C6 Z06, I figured I would weigh in with my $.02 (which is probably worth a bit less than that).
The C6 Vette -- let alone the Z06 -- has the performance edge due to sheer physics (it's lighter, lower, and wider...and only has 2 seats). It also has the more advanced (normally aspirated) engine. And yes, the Vette is probably more reliable since it is a higher volume production car with tons of racing research and $$$ poured in from Chevy. If all you want is the best track racer, get the Vette.
For me, the Saleen won out because I wanted a beautiful, brute muscle car that I could drive my kids around in if I wanted. Plus, the Saleen reminded me a LOT of the Aston Martin Vantage from when I was a kid fantasizing about super cars: http://www.v8astonmartin.com/V8VantageVolante.html http://www.autosportdesigns.com/Sale...1294-30885.jpg
I also liked the rarity factor -- the Saleen looks like nothing else on the road while Vettes don't turn many heads.
Btw, I'm guessing you'll be posting on Vette boards as well? If so, let us know if you find a single person who traded in his '05-'08 Saleen for a Vette...
for the saleens, has there been any huge changes that would make it better to get an 06 over an 05, or 05 over an 07, and so forth? jusr wondering cuz i know sometimes newer is not always better
also, any input on the supercharger question? any reason to get a supercharged saleen over a natural saleen and then supercharging it yourself?
Here's my $0.02...having owned and driven an '01 C5 and now an '04 Saleen (supercharged S281) I agree with a lot of what's been said. The Saleen will probably result in more of a "wow" factor than a 'vette, despite the fact that a new 'vette (especially a Z06) IN MY OPINION looks a lot better than the new Saleens (the retro styling of the current gen Mustangs just doesn't appeal to me as much as the '94-04 body). If you want the extra attention, the Saleen will definitely not let you down in that department. As for the handling, the 'vette is far superior, in terms of other performance numbers you'll find some pretty similar results at somewhat similar pricepoints.
In terms of your situation with the supercharger, I'm not sure how warranty is affected by doing it aftermarket, although I'd guess that it wouldn't be covered and I think you'd be kind of shooting yourself in the foot there. With a hi-perf vehicle, the more protection you can have, the better. I'd pony up the dough for whatever Saleen package you can get that allows you to maintain full warranty coverage with the most power, if you decide to go the Saleen route.
If I was in your position, and I was back and forth between a new Z06 or a new Saleen...well, I love my current car but I'd have to go Z06 in all honesty.

Interesting reading that Vette thread you started. The only thing I am really shocked at is that nobody mentionedthat there is that there is NO chance of you getting a C6 Z06 for anywhere near 30k. For that price, you can get a nice C5Z, but not a C6Z. Are you looking to spend 30k or looking for a brand new car? The 465HP Saleen started on the late 06's. You will have a really tough time trying to find one of those for 30k. If 30k is what you want to spend, get the n/a, and do the work yourself. Warranty isnot going to be that big of a deal as there will not be much warranty left on a Saleen that you would buy for 30k.
I really like both cars, but for the money, it would be between a C5z, and probably an 06 n/a Saleen. Does the back seat mean anything at all to you? If you are out for just performance, get the Vette. If you want compliments to death, and a fast car, go with the Saleen.
another factor, I found much lower insurance quotes on the Saleen's than on the 'vettes I was comparison shopping a few months ago (C5's versus '01-'04 Saleen SC'd). Probably due to the fact that they were insuring the Saleen as a GT though...
