Im debating on which model to purchase, my choice resides at a 1990 5.0 LX or a 2000 4.6L convertible. The cost of the car does not matter, however what is better on gas and also whats cheaper on insurance?, I like both they're looks but I can't decide. Also, I thought that knowing the 2000 Stang obviously weighs more than the 5.0, wouldn't it cost more on gas even though it's a smaller displacement?
The gas is about the same. Most 5.0 guys with gears can pull in about 20 mpg wich is about what my buddie's geared 03gt with a 4.6 gets. Stock for stock the 2000 will be a bit faster but like jasper said, 5.0 parts are very cheap. Even if you buy new parts. However 5.0's have all kinds of free mods to start out with and it's easy to find cheap, 2nd hand parts to beef it up real good. One thing is, you will feel the torque a great deal more in a 5.0 which is why I love mine. Also, the insurance is a hit or miss. The 1990 will likely be cheaper do to less value of the vehicle but either way, it's insurance on a stang. lol

The difference in MPG is really negligible at best. You are looking at somewhere around 15-17 city and ~25 highway in either case. The other points jasper made should really be your deciding factor. The insurance should be much lower on the 5.0 due to its age, though.

which car is "better" depends on who you are. The fox will have more wear and tear on it, but offers a cheaper platform and stiffer chassis compared to a vert. Depending on your state, you might not need deal with emissions testing being a car < '96. If your looking something more mechanically in tact, the 4.6 will do just fine. IMO if your looking speed/complete overhaul, 5.0. If your looking for a fun weekend car with a little giddiyup, 4.6L. Either way you should be content.

i get about the same gas mileage on mine. mods for my 5.0 are so much cheaper then my 4.6, and its easier to work on in my opinion. my 5.0 is also about half the amount that i pay for the 4.6 on insurance.
