Default Turning over an engine Manually

How can I use the starter to turn the engine. My engine is pulled out and I want to use the starter and battery to turn the engine. How do I do this?

If the starter is installed, just ground the battery to the engine and tap the solenoid connection with the positive lead.

If the engine is already out why don't you just use a breaker bar and socket on the crankshaft bolt? Doesn't take that much effort and it's probably safer than tapping bare electrical leads together.

You will need to install the bellhousing, flywheel and starter.

But why must you turn it with the starter if it's out of the car?

right now i have the engine assembled, no plugs in, the torque converter is attached, the flywheel as well as bell housing I need to get two nuts on the torque converter, but i cant reach it unless i turn the engine over. I can't do it using a breaker bar, I was thinking of using the starter to do it. How can I do it, when I attach the starter directly to the battery it just sparks, no turn. Starter is new. Do I need to include the solenoid?
