port noise problems? - 5/16/2008 10:41:55 PM    pk222   Posts: 315 Joined: 3/23/2007 Status: offline hey guys I have 2 10 in old hx2s in a 2.389 cu ft box ported to 35 hz I made. the mistake I made is that I made my aero port out of a 4 in piece of abs. I know I should have baught an actual aero port but just wanted to get the box done. I'm looking for some small things I could do to possibly git rid of the port noise or at least just stop a little of it. thanks in advance and input is really appreciated. < Message edited by pk222 -- 5/16/2008 10:44:06 PM > Post #: 1

The aeroport will help, but I have used 4" PVC and have nto had an issue with noise. That box seems a little big to me for some reason. How much clearance does your port have between it and the back of the box. At a minimum you need as much distance as the diameter of your port. _____________________________ It needs a little work... I will try to break my seal and move it out a little bit to see if that helps . 2.3 cu ft for 2 10s? I thought that was really small. the port is 4 in by 10.5 tuned to 32 hz. it sounds great on certain notes but others it sounds fuzzy not like the subs are blown just port noise. More then likely, its is on notes where the sub moves the most air... 2.3 is tiny for a tuned enclosure. I have my home theatre subs (single 12's) in around 4 cubes  with a 4 inch port... _____________________________ It needs a little work... (in reply to pk222) Post #: 4

RE: port noise problems? - 5/17/2008 6:55:15 PM    ttocs   Posts: 4342 Joined: 2/27/2006 Status: offline I have never had a problem with port noise myself after a bunch of years installing.  But then I have always recommend and built sealed boxes as well..........  It is part of my kiss philosophy as in my experience with a well built sealed box you can normally adjust the signal through different equalizations methodes(equalizers or bass cubes) to tune the box much much easier then you can tune a well planned and built  ported box, let alone one you just built to get it done.  ports are not just holes in boxes they are finely tuned instruments and I am afraid that 90% of installers and box builders(myeself included) do not understand them.  it is not what you want to hear but just for kicks try pluggin up that port and see what it sounds like.  I have seen people temporarily stuff either towels or fleece material clothing and get a fairly good seal.  You can then try you bass adjustments on the deck or if you are carefull the loudness if you want more but if you want more out of your sub, you need to start simple and from the top, at the box......... RE: port noise problems? - 5/17/2008 9:53:13 PM    pk222   Posts: 315 Joined: 3/23/2007 Status: offline I had the box sealed before and it was allright but I had never done a ported box and wanted to experiment and see how to do it, how it sounds.... Mine turned out bad but I will try to pull the port out a little and re seal it and see how it goes. if it goes bad then I will just plug it off. right now I adjusted my gains and the h/u but still get some port noise. I will move the port out to have around 5-6 in of room between the back of the port and the box and hope it goes good if not Ill try making another port thats flaired and if that goes bad I'll just buy a T1 and build a sealed box because thats what I was planning if this went bad. these subs are old and worn out so I wasnt too worried about it, and I was planning on upgrading amps and to a single T1 12. I'll post tomarrow after I move the port out and see how it goes (in reply to ttocs) Post #: 6

I have them ported for now and Ill try porting it to 35 hz and flair the inside of the port with a map gas torch and a bowl. this is how to flair abs right? if that dosent work then I'll just cover the ports and try a new amp and see if these wake up a little and if they dont then I'm going with the t1 12 or maybe the 15, contemplating because I still want good quality punchy bass. anyone think of an amp I could use on these 2 dual 4 ohm subs and could also run the T1 in either dual 2 or 4 ohm? just dont want to buy an amp for my hx2s and not be happy, go to the T1 and the amp wont be able to push the T1 at the right impedence and power. either the dual 2 or dual 4 ohm T1 I havent baught it yet and its rms is 600 but I want to throw at least 800 to it. thanks in advance.
