May be the gas cap.

What about the gas cap? I put a locking gas cap on it and took the stock off.

That may be the problem.  The manual says the gas cap can throw that light.  Put the stocker back on and see if it goes away.

Actually, I just reviewed my manual, there is a special light if equipped for fuel cap....  BUT the is an entire section in the back Maintenance and Specifications section that is written in BOLD not to use any other fuel cap, damage can result, and it can void the warranty.  The "wrench" light is limp mode.

I think anything that can cause damage to the engine will throw you into limp.  The manual said non-factory caps can cause a vacuum in the tank, and damage fuel system components.  If the computer sensed it, it probably saved you some money.  As far as a haynes, no haven't seen one.  You can look here for info:

I found the troubleshooting chart, and it said to go to chart 12 for the wrench, first thing to check is the fuel cap for the fuel cap light, scroll down and it sends you on goose chase.

You don't happen to have a tuner so you can check for DTCs do you.

What about the gas cap? I put a locking gas cap on it and took the stock off.

I bought a locking gas cap from AutoZone. The rubber ring is not fit the opening of the gas tank tight and the gas cap light is on. I returned it and bought MotorCraft locking gas cap for Mustang 2005. The MotorCraft is perfect. If the gas cap light on and you put the stock gas cap back, it takes one to two days for the light is OFF depend od how long you drive.

It was my understanding that new cars these days ( Im assumming our Mustangs qualify ) are built with gas tanks with a curved/angled fuel delivery pipe as to not allow a hose or something like that to reach the tank....hense, no chance of stealing gas....

They don't steal gas. I am afraid of bad neighbor to put sand or sugar into my gas tank. It is more dangerous than stealing gas.

Someone said athat Advanced Auto will read the codes for you. You may want to check them out. The only other option is to take it back to the dealer.
