At least that's what I assume they are.  The ones in the floors, inside the back quarters, etc.  Mostly the rubber type, although the back floor has bolted down metal ones.  What are they for?  Did they drain something during manufacture?  Do they serve any purpose now?  If I am repairing a quarter which contains one do I have to replace it or can I just cover it over with new steel?

hehe their drain holes.. rainy day windows down cruising, convertible with top down car washes, etc..

There are a few plug kits around that include something like 22 or 28 plugs and you should pick one up and replace them. Its pretty cheap if i remember right. I'd suggest leaving the quarter drains instead of covering them over. I just replaced the drivers quarter 2 weeks ago on ours and left it in. erm.. or rather we fabed in new metal and cut out the drain hole again.

If you get a leak around the trunk, rear window, through the wheel well, parked @ side of road changing a tire on a rainy day and hit by a wave of water from that big truck going by.... you get my point I think. Having the drain means simply popping the plug and allowing the water to drain out and wiping up the area later.

Hows the car coming overall btw? Didn't this all start for you with what seamed like a few small rust holes.

Actually it started with just taking the chrome off and sanding for paint.  Just today the body shop which will be painting it sent a guy by my house to check on the prep.  I offered to pay a hour charge for that service but they said no thanks.  They were happy to do it.  Anyway my prep is fine.  The bonded patches are fine.  He found one wavey area which I will fix.  Everything is near ready.  I wanted it ready by next week but I think it will be Memorial Day weekend.  I could have just sanded and painted but I am glad I took out the previous owner's quarter patches at the bottom of the quarters and the flares.  They were mostly aluminum and a bunch of screws and bondo (very thick and backed with caulk!).  The patches I cut from the repro panels worked well and there is so little bondo involved a magnet will now stick everywhere.  It was more work, but worth it.  Thanks for asking.  I'll get the plug kit.  Most all of them are probably rotten anyway.

Good to hear its almost paint ready. Yeah the plug kit is a good idea to get and just replace them all.

I took a very weak magnet over our entire car and it stuck everywhere. I've since found (and replaced) the complete drivers quarter. I knew the flare had rusted out anyways but while wet sand blasting I found all the bodyfill which they added metal flake to! hehe that screwed the old magnet test. In area on that quarter the fill was over 1/2" thick. I had ordered a complete quarter and outer wheelwell anyways so a few days and it was all replaced. Rest of the car was pretty much bondo free though thankfully.
