Default Drip Rail Moulding on a vinyl top

A guy stopped me the other day to ask me where I got my drip rail mouldings. He said the mouldings are impossible to install on a Mustang with a vinyl top. He said he's already ruined a couple sets. What is he doing wrong? Is it as simple as he should trim back just a bit of the vinyl so he doesn't have to fit the moulding over it?

When I bought my Mustang, a new set of mouldings were included with the car. I've been planning on replacing them, but now I'm a little afraid of the project. After reading the article in the "How To" section, I'm not feeling any more at ease. That article says replacing the mouldings is a pain in the arse.

Default RE: Drip Rail Moulding on a vinyl top

I just installed a reproduction set of drip rail moldings on my 68 Coupe with a vinyl roof last week. The only way Icould get them to fit over the drip rail was to cut the vinyl completely off the face of the drip rail, exposing the metal roof edge. To ensure that i would not have any water problems, i put black silicone caulking in the drip rail seal the edge of the vinyl. Then they installed a lot easier.

I had to start with the back corner, then work down the rear edge of the molding. Once that was done, i worked on snapping the rest of the molding on moving towards the front of the car. Using a thick glove I used my hand to snap on the molding.

Directly from the factory they came with the drip rail molding installed on and over the vinyl. The vinyl roof comes down into the trough across and then up under the molding. This is to help keep water from getting under the vinyl roof. Its a pain in the ass to do but can be done since it came from the factory this way.If you cant get them installed without cutting the vinyl back (I'd suggest not doing this btw) then take it into a shop and have them do it.
