Default Problem filling the gas tank

I have a '68 Coupe with a Pop Open style gas tank cover. As a result, it is difficult to fill up at the gas station. Worst of all, I havent found a way to fill up without gas coming back out the filler neck when the tank is barely half full.

Any advise?

Welcome to the world of vapor recycling and auto-shutoff pumps=/ Insert the nozzle, take the handle and rotate it until it's at about 2 o'clock, then push it towards the car. I still have to fill up pretty slow at most pumps, but it seems to help repeated auto shutoffs. I just have to listen when the tank starts getting full to make sure I don't overfill it.

Same thing here- I look like an idiot trying to fill up my 68 coupe. I was actually going to make a similar post. Does anyone have any good tricks or tips for filling up?

when I read the subject I thought: "I envy this man"

same as Starfury, but I only insert the filler halfway and press the hanldle down half way (instead of fully). Takes double the time, but works for me.

Try a different gas station. I have the same issue with my 69. There are just some pumps that will not work on it without all that trouble but, I have found a place with pumps that work pretty good. I have also found that if I don't get the thing completely in the tank, it'll overflow. I hold it down about 4 oclock...it keeps the nozzle pointed down the filler tube.

Same here ... and I like it! It shows how cool it is to drive this kind of car, even filling the tank is different

Two different ways seem ot work for me.

1. do like starfury said and turn the nozzle to about two o clock and pull the handle about half way or less. this is slow but the otto shutoff doesn't seem to kick in as much. I keep filling slowly untill I can see the gas level by looking into the filler tube (through the gas cap).
2. most pumps have a bent wang shape, the filler tube has a bent wang shape but of a different angle. I try to get the nozzle in andpointing DOWN as far as possible so the gas doesn't spash back of the back of the filler tube rusulting in leaks and auto shut off. this method works well too and is a little faster.

pick the one that works best for the nozzle you are using. short straight nozzle use number 1 longer bent nozzle use number 2.

Hope this helps.

Is this a problem with all gas cap/filler tubes. Or just like the flip down ones that get in the way?

Cant wait to fill mine up when its done in a year or so. Gas will be what... like $6-7. [:@]
