Default 89 lx 5.0 fuel problem?

I've got a 89 lx 5.0 vert. Everytime I turn the key on I can hear the fuel pump kick on for a few seconds. I got in it one morning and turned the key on and the pump didn't come on. I cycled the key probably 20 times with no luck. No pump, no start. That afternoon I tried it again and the pump kicked on first try. I drove the car up the road and made it about 10 mins. and the pump shut off. I sat on the side of the road for about 10 mins. and it started working again. I changed out the fuel pump relay with no luck. I know the module on the side of the distributor can cause this as well as a bad fuel pump but is there any way of knowing? I'd hate to change out a good part. Anyone else have this problem?

How many miles on the car?
The fuel pumps do wear out eventually.
Sounds to me like the brushes are getting short(they transfer the 12volts to the armature).
they're probably just long enough to do the job now.
Change your fuel pump BEFORE you get left somewhere( Usually when you got your good clothes on) Murphy's Law you know!
