Default Gear install....how difficult?

I want to do gears, but the quotes I have gotten are outrageous... $800 and $850. Im just wondering if gear install is something to let a shopdo.

If you have no experience and the cash to pay for it, let them do it. That price is steep though. Check around the shops, alot of folks do side work at home. I've done 3 sets and the first ones were a pain, it took me awhile to get depth and lash set correctly.

if you have never done it or dont know anything about it dont touch it. you need specialty tools and need to be very persice or the rear is gunna growl at you the second you go to drive. 850 is very steep unless they are including the gears overhaul kit and trac lock rebuild in with it other wise you should see about 500 to put in gears and the over haul and track lock rebuild all at once

Sounds like this is something to let a shop do. The price was for the gear and install kit, but I think I can find a better price.I know gears do alot, butId rather put 800 towards doing an H/C/I swap and do it myself. Mods I want to do on my car are just and dream and don't become reality till I do the **** myself.

I have the special tools to do it and they totalled close to 1000.00 for special tools......trust me you ain't gonna do it yourself wihout the tools..you need the special tool to measure for the correct shim for pinion depthe then a dial indicator to set up backlash and you need to know how to set preload on carrier and pinion bearing...so take it to a shop and pay to have it done ..shop around for competitive pricing

I gave up on the idea and swapped to 9" rears for my fox cars
I have the third member set once and swap them when desired
only have 2 right now, 3.0:1 open and 3.89:1 detroit locker, would like 3.27 or 3.50 with Eaton Detroit Truetrac or Auburn ECTED Locker

Same here. All the shops want 800 plus...fockin rediculous when a new rear complete without axles from ford racing or summit can be had for roughly the same price with 3.73s.

Gears are a pia and you really have to know what you're doing.
