I just got my '05 GT about a month ago. I have not had alot of time to get used to it. Took it out tonight to a nice quiet stretch of road out in the middle of nowhere and figured I'd open it up. I wanted to see where the Rev Limiter kicked in first so I left it in first and floored it...well... not a good idea. Before it hit (or after?) the rev limit it...locked up. Hard to explain but letting off the clutch was like pressing the break. Let it coast to about 5mph with the clutch open, shifted back into 1st and let off the clutch and it was like nothing ever happened. I'm new so forgive my ignorance but, what happened here? Should'nt I have bumped the rev limiter before something like that happened?

I haven't ever heard of that happening. I hit my rev limiter in 1st gear by accident one day. And all that happened was I lost power and just left off the gas and hit it again. But, don't try to hit that stuff. It is for when you don't mean to do it. Not just to do it.

Hitting the rev limiter isn't that big of a deal, just try not to do it that often. The factory default is 6250.  Brenspeed reset mine to 6500 which I still hit on rare occasions when I'm not paying attention.  These engines are well balanced and constructed. They can take the occasional run-up to redline.

It doesn't sound like the rev limiter.  Did you have TCS on?

I launch my car on the deck (when I don't spray out of the hole).  That means on the first light I put it on the wood.  It's banging the rev limiter when I dump the clutch.  It leaves well this way.

If it was the rev limiter (which I don't think it was) it shouldn't do any damage to the car.  Given that the car is in proper operating condition.

I don't think its even worth speculating until we get a clearer description of what happened.  It could be that he just ran it up to the rev limiter and it stopped accelerating, thereby feeling like he was "pressing the break"...  Kind of an idiotic thing to do anyway you look at it...

Wow, no need to get defensive.
What's idiotic is setting out to purposely hit the rev limiter, just to see what happens.  Can you tell me why you would want to do this?  Obviously it didn't work of too well for him is he is posting to find out what went wrong.

Sorry, didn't mean to come off as defensive. Just teasing. These cars were meant to be driven and hitting the rev limiter hasn't been anything other than a rare nuisance to me (I've probably hit it 4 or 5 times in the past 10 months). It never seemed to cause anything unusual once my RPM's dropped below the setpoint.

If you want to hear a 4.6 hitting the rev limter there's no need to do it to your own ride, just watch 80% of the planks doing burnouts in their Mustangs on YouTube. With their feet planted firmly on the carpet and in 1st gear, they are incapable of controlling the revs and merely let the limiter do the work. it's outright painful

rev limiter is a life saver for the motor. Stay away from it

+1

Last week I got on mine for like the 500th time and after almost 1.5 years driving it I grinded 3rd and over reved it. Needless to say I was exhausted and not thinking clearly when I was doing it. Moral is I HATED the sound of my motor over reving......so why would you want to hear it on purpose

These motors sound great at high rpms. The rev limiter is set too low. Set the limiter to 6800
and shift at 6400-6500. Haven't heard of anyone here blowing their motor due to over revving.
The ones who have blown up motors are the ones running boost.

Of course I wouldn't shift there everytime, but when you want to...she can take it.

Brenspeed and Bama both set my limiter at 6800.

Why would you own a perfomance car that you intended to drive under perfomance (read: dangerous) conditions and not only want to know the cars limitations but what those limitations feel like.  What i experienced was not the rev limiter but a mechanical problem with my clutch (car is in the shop right now). I was intentionally trying to bump the limiter to 1) verify where it kicked in 2) decide how early i needed to shift to avoid it 3) see how far back it went if i did hit it to determine stratagies to compensate if i ever miss timed it 4) understand what that felt like so I would be certain to know what was happening without having to take my eyes off the road to look at the insturment panel. The same day I also tested my breaks under heavy conditions and determined how far i'd have to go to break traction in a turn. So that wasn't the only "idiotic thing I did that day.

If you are BRAKING (that's how it's spelled BTW) in the middle of the turn then bumping the rev limiter is the least of your worries.

well sure, but I think you misunderstand. I was doing those things one at a time not all at once. And yeah..."breaking" made it past my spell check while I was typing quickly at work but, thank you for both calling me an idiot and correcting my spelling, it's a refreshing change from all the flaming that happens on internet forums

Some of these posts are funny

Yes you hit the revlimiter. In the S197 mustangs the computer simply shuts the fuel off which makes the car feel like it is turned off. It's better than the New Edge mustangs (like my old 00) where the computer would simply cause a some of the plugs to stop firing. Essentially causing a misfire storm that would bounce the engine RPM right at the limit.

I personally think this current method is way easier on the engine but a little freaky when you do it the first couple of times on accident. Is it ok to hit it? If you're broken in and it's not all the time, it won't hurt anything. If the car could't handle it, they would put the redline close to 4500RPM like some Dodge pickups I've seen in the past

You also need to remember, our cars peak HP is close to redline.
