It is just a rust converter. I make the surface as clean as I can and apply it. If it is too bad I just cut it out and make or buy a new panel. You can tell that it is working because it turns the rusty area a different collor. usually black I believe. Been a while since I used it.
I used POR 15 on some spots last year. The rust has not reappeared, but my car is garage kept driven a few k per year, and some of the area's are hidden.
I heard a lot of good things about POR 15 before I used it.
You have a classic Mustang you have rust. I am suprised there aren't more reponse's to this thread.

I've used something like that, nothing fancy actually got it at walmart, but it does seem to work. Can't be a really badly rusted area, mostly surface rust is what i've used it for, just cleaned it up best as possible and used it over the rust. You will see it turn black, sometimes you'll need more than one coat (mine is in a spray can). I use self etching primer over top of that. I'm taking an autobody class and my teacher swears by rustoleum as a good and inexpensive alternative. I have some I'll be using on my floors. They make a self etch rustoleum kind of primer and all kinds of products you can find them at home depot. Or Epoxy paint, I am using that on the car also and then undercoating. Hoping this thing won't rust again.

I had actually kicked that idea around oddly enough. Especially for things like when I pull my carpet I want to sand / paint the floor before I put back in new carpet. When I pulled the back seat out last Friday night I noticed some minor surface rust on the rear floor.
This evening I was crawling around under the car again and checking things out. There is a LOT of built up road grime, dirt, etc but most of the rust is light / surface type stuff. The floor trunk looks really good both on top and the bottom. Should be well more than fine with some cleaning, priming and painting on the rear end.
The very front of my floor pans is a different story. My thought is it appears the guy who used to own the car put a floor jack under to lift the car on several occasions because there is one spot on both sides that will either need to be patched or possibly even might have to put in at least the short pans.
Not sure about the last one but from the way the stuff at Hirsh auto is advertised sounds almost exactly like por 15. I imagine it works in much the same way. The por 15 though you're supposed to use a special cleaner and etcher before you paint, which is more work, but I've heard good things about it. One guy in my class used some and seems to be a good product. But I'm actually doing the same with my floors, I had to replace parts of the front and one rear and will use the rustoleum inside. I did use epoxy on the outside, but I imagine the rustoleum would work there fine also. Hit it with undercoat when you're all done and should be good and sealed up.
