View Full Version : SHOCKING!
slvrstang2007 05-13-2008, 07:55 PM Every time I get out of my car and go to close my door I get shocked! A hard shock sometimes too, I have rubber floor mats and leather seats so I dont think I'm building up any static electricity, and it only shocks my when I'm getting out of the car after I drove it, never getting in. Does this mean my car hates me? I havnt done any modifications to the electrical system...yet, so any ideas why this happens?
So_Cali 05-13-2008, 08:02 PM LOL Mine does that too, god forbid that doesnt ever happen when I'm gasing up[&o]Stock floormats BTW
2007CalSpec 05-13-2008, 09:00 PM Shave your back and chest hairs. That should reduce the friction between you and your clothing thus reducing static build up. [8D]
Rubber actually reacts with carpeting to generate static. You can always get ESD shoes to dissipate static. Wind blowing across your skin can generate static if the humidity is low.
Orion_240 05-14-2008, 02:18 AM do you live in a dry area?
You might be building up static electricity with those floor mats.
Use it to power your car! If you want to go really fast you just rub a balloon on your head!:D
speedsteed1 05-14-2008, 03:53 AM sometimes im scared to get out of my car.....i have to drag my left leg along the side of the car as i get out to avoid the lightning. ive had a few bad ones
MustangFan45 05-14-2008, 04:18 AM Mine does not shock me. But, my taurus does.
YellowFlame 05-14-2008, 03:17 PM Drive naked.
No more shocks. (not electrical ones anyway.)
ensign_lee 05-14-2008, 04:07 PM Sorry, but that's REAAALY funny. Maybe your car does hate you?;)
As for solutions, I dunno. Be nicer to her? Buy her more mods; you know she'll love that. hehe. [8D]
157db 05-14-2008, 04:23 PM You have too much carbon in your tire rubber compound.
Get different tires with less carbon in the rubber composition.
Or carry a neon bulb and discharge yourself thru it to the stang
before getting in. ;)
Mustang3GT07 05-14-2008, 04:27 PM Mine shocks me. Only once in awhile thoe.
pascal 05-14-2008, 04:30 PM Is the Electric Mustang out[&:]?
Before it's time?
Hey you should sell that one to Awl Gore:D.
JimsGT 05-14-2008, 04:41 PM Happens to me all winter, in any car I drive, the Mustang, or my DD Accord. Sometimes its real bad, and at sometimes you can see the arc!!!
musicheadt 05-14-2008, 05:32 PM I get shocked a lot as well. Air moving over the surface of your car produces static, moreso in low humidity weather (the fall and winter). I wear silk/blend suits a lot, which makes static worse. If you screw a length of chain from your undercariage and let it touch the ground, it will dissipate any charge to ground. Our cars tires insulate us from ground, and allow us to build a charge. Goofy little fact about electricity.....it takes 1000 volts of electricity to "arc" or "jump" 1 inch across air to a more negatively charged particle. Just some useless trivia for you all.
If you really want to stop getting shocked, copper chain would work the best. Actually Gold or Platinum would, but that would be expensive.
DarkFireGT 05-14-2008, 06:14 PM I get shocked a lot too, and I hate getting shocked. What I generally do is get it over with by lightly smacking the top of the door. Since I know it's coming, it's not nearly as annoying.
To completely avoid it, you can screw a chain or copy wire to your undercarraige and let it dangle on the ground, to ground you. But you might pick stuff up with that, too.
marcuskeeler 05-14-2008, 06:15 PM Yea, an anti static strip is the best way out of this.
If you want to avoid the painful shocks though, grip the door frame tightly as you get out, the discharge won't be anywhere near as painful.
badger2840 05-14-2008, 06:18 PM I always thought that a car with a fresh wax job produced less electricity ? Can anyone dispute this or affirm it . My dad always said , when your car shocks you time to wax her up .
Thurman 05-14-2008, 06:50 PM My Sequoia gets me every time.
OhioState87 05-14-2008, 07:46 PM My car shocks me too! Bad sometimes. I have to pump myself up just to get out and get schocked. It's an adrenelin rush, by the time I get out, close the door, and get shocked, I'm ready to fight! [:@]
MustangFan45 05-14-2008, 11:05 PM Do you drive your car like you stole it each time you get in it?

Shipwreck 05-15-2008, 12:26 AM You could always jump thru the windows Duke of Hazzard style to stop the shock... just a thought.[sm=smiley29.gif]
