Default Replacing door lock cylinders...

All,

I am currenty replacing the door lock cylinders from my '65...I understand that once I remove the retaining clips I should be able to remove the cylinders from the doors. My question is how do I remove the cylinder rod (up and down movement rod) from the lock cylinder? It looks like it is held with a plastic clip...any ideas how to remove it without breaking this clip?

Hiya. that's exactly what you have to do. And yes if you don't have new clips, try to not brake the old clips.
I did and found a sh1tty workaround until I got new ones.
It is a commonb clip that you would find on a lot of rods, for example the one going to accellerator pump in carb.

They basically clamp onto the length of the rod and at the end they have a circle shaped washer that goes over the bent rod.
So when you basically have to turn it away from the length of the rod. Don't know if that makes much sense here ...
Basically that thing's job is to make sure the rod doesn't jump out of the hole and fall down into the door. Makes more sense now?

In any case you brake them they're a like 50 cents a pair at a mustang part supplier. maybe you can get them elsewhere as well.
If you broke them but can't get any in near future (you're stuck), let us know. I have a 'workaround' in place that already holds for 4 months now

Kalli,

Thanks for your responding with help! The darn clip broke...can you tell me what your workaround is? Where did you order your new ones from?

I ordered new clips from Virginia Classic Mustang but I am sure most classic Mustang parts places have them.

Here is the link to the part, about $5 to buy.

Ironic that I managed to not break mine when I changed the cylinders but I went ahead and replaced the clips anyway.

Had to use some WD40 on mine before I could get them off, they were pretty old and pretty stuck.
