View Full Version : Could this be the root of my problem?

Well I finally got the "new" trans in there (aod in a '87 5.0) and went to try the shift points while i still had it on the stands and it still only shifts from 1st to 2nd, no 3rd or 4th. Then I got looking around under the hood and found this cable broke. Could that be the root of my problems or does it not matter that the white plastic inner part is broke? I know I need the bushing in the linkage but I had it zip tied in there for now so it does not move. If it does not matter about the cable what could cause it? If it is the cable what is the correct name for it and would autozone or advance have it or do I have to go to a trans shop?

Sorry they are not the greatest pics.

That is the Throttle Valve (TV) cable.... if you run that AOD with that cable disconnected, the transmission will require to be serviced......again.

you need to examine the range of motion of the shifter and cable on both ends;)

When i have it hooked up the cable moves the linkage on the transmission if that is what you mean. I can hook it up and have someone press the gas petal and the linkage on the trans will move forward.

When you took your old one out, was the center input shaft broken?

Did the transmission you put in have it installed, any chance it fell out?

input shaft was solid, put it in the "new" trans. it didnt fall out cause when i put the torque converter in it dropped down on all three shafts and there was no shaft left laying on the ground when it was all said and done so i dont see how it could be missing.

From what i have read in other places, that plastic being broke does not seem to matter much. If i am correct it is just a guide to keep the cable binding. Is this correct? Could the valve body itself need to be replaced? Just curious because in my limited experience with auto trans. it seems like the only other cause to this problem.

[sm=feedback.gif] wife is getting pissed that I have to keep on driving her car and i need to get this figured out fast. Could it be the valve body is clogged with something? I just dont get why I would have the exact same problem with a new trans as i did with the old one.

Unfortunately, it sounds like there is something wrong internaly. I'm not an expert with the TV linkage, but I think that it would have more to do with shift points rather than a no 3rd/4th problem.

It is akward that 2 trannies have the same issue.

This is just a shot in the dark, but any chance the splines in the torque converter may be stripped out that drive the 3rd/4th locking input shaft? (Is it the same converter that you are using?)

I do know that a bad valve body can cause the tranny from dropping down into lower gears when slowing down, (i've seen them stay locked in 3rd when slowing down and it causes the engine to stall when coming to a stop unless it is trown into neutral). I have also seen a bad valve body casue an aod to be unresponsive.

Also, just checking... the input shaft still had the splines on both ends, right.

Because I have seen them twist and break one end of the slines off perfectly flat and clean that it looked like it was machined that way.

yep splines on both ends. could it be the valve body? I amabout to get a shift kit and put in it so Ican swapvalve bodies and have the gasket andsee if that helps. Whatdo you all think?i gotta get this fixed and nothing is making sense about it. Someones gotta know something.

Just saw you mentioned in your last post it could be the torque converter, how would I go about checking that short of putting a new one in and seeing if that solves it? Them things are not cheap and I dont have that kind of money to throw at it[sm=boohoo.gif].

Adjust the TV cable it will cause no 2-3 and no 3-4 shifts. I put a trans in my grandpa's marquis same deal. Instead of messing with it we sold it cheap. The guy who bought it opened the hood and adjusted the cable...BOOM it worked perfect. I'll never forget it

I have it set to where all the slack is removed. I have tried adjusting it up and back further all with the same results.
