Its actually about 34 miles each way, so almost 70 miles a day. Its mostly freeway with fairly light traffic since I miss rush hour. Takes me about 45 minutes drive time each way. I think i'm really starting to lean toward the bike. I havent really ridden a sport bike since my "friend" totaled out my bike about 10 years ago, so i'm gonna be looking at the 600's.

As soon as I get back from overseas, I'm buying a '68 coupe for fun and a 650R for the commute.. I still have my truck, but Florida gas prices are a bit higher than where I live now, and driving a 4wd truck just doesn't make sense, when it's lifted and big ass tires, getting 12-17mpg.. A bike can be a lot more fun, and depending on the bike, can be a bit faster than a Cobra, with less insurance, and less of a foot print in your yard.. Plus I'm thinking up keep and maintenace would also be a plus to a bike.. Sh-t, most folks who do work on their cars, could rebuild an entire bike in less than a day.. Rebuilding a 4.6 from top to bottom for someone who isn't as experienced, would have a tough time doing it in a whole day.. JT

If this is in the interest of saving money, don't get a crotch rocket; the insurance will easily cancel a good chunk of that gas savings. I'd recommend a Suzuki SV650, which is plenty quick, and much lower insurance. Especially if you haven't had a bike before. I'm riding around on an old 82 Yamaha 650, and insurance is <$300 for the entire year. Any bike with 600cc will be quick, so get more of a commuter bike than a race bike. Just my advice..

ORIGINAL: MU71L4710N insurance isnt bad on a bike actually. i pay 950 a year full coverage with less than a year of riding experience and i'm 22 and this is a 2008 bike (was quoted about 800 a year for 2005 models). liability only will only set me back ~250 a year for pretty much any 600cc. my bikes full coverage insurance is less than what my mustangs is...mustang is ~130 a month. ehhh...up keep isnt really a plus on a bike. if you beat it up you should be changing the oil every 1000 or so miles, chain needs to be cleaned and oiled anytime it gets wet, etc... they arent tedius...but its not something that can just sit in the garage and not worry about maintenance on. Man, I pay less than that a year for my 96 Saleen. My bike (a 2002 Suzuki Bandit 600S, similar to the SV650S) is only 200.00/year (full coverage) for insurance. I am 25 though which makes a slight bit of difference, but that is a lot of dough for motorcycle insurance. I would fully advocate a bike over the termi though (even though I want a termi bad as well), but look at it this way. Your GT is paid off, you can park it in the garage and spend $15 bucks to fill your tank with a bike. On a 600cc bike with mostly highway miles you should push close to 50mpg. Or you can forgo the bike, trade in the GT, have at least a 400/mo payment and then insurance on top of that, plus gas for the termi.

That's what I'm saying.. I'd say though, a 96 Saleen (12 y/o car) would be considerably cheaper on insurance than a 2003/4 500hp Cobra, for the fact of depreciation and power differences.. I figure, over the next couple of years, if you can, set aside about $400 a month, which would be about the payment of a Cobra, and then when you've saved up enough money, just buy one outright.. It makes a lot of sense if you think about it, and by then, you'll be old enough as to where your insurance is lower, and you'll be in a better job where you can afford things like insurance and modifications.. Definitely don't want a Terminator to be your only mode of transportation. I live in Chicago, maybe my insurance rates are a bit higher because of that.. $200 a year full coverage for an 02 Bandit? Mind if I ask who you go through?

I'm in Portland, OR which is a fairly large Metro area. I go through American Family insurance. I do get a a multiple vehicle (3) discount plus I also have my Home insurance through them. So I've maxed out the discounts and don't know what it would be if I didn't have them. As a comparison, my first bike has a 250 Ninja and insurance was $500/year with the same provider and discounts. They said that the difference was because it was classified a crotch rocket, whereas the Bandit is not.
