View Full Version : Radar Detectors?
08Bullitt215 05-13-2008, 03:55 PM What is everyone using? I had a Silver Bullet that lasted me 4 years but unfortunetly i lost it... so, i was wondering which radar is good. ive seen the valentin 1 but there anywhere from 450 to 600 bucks! i need to get one soon bc the cops where i live are effing pricks, they'll get you for going 1 mile over the limit!!!![:@] thankS!!!!
ThumperMX113 05-13-2008, 03:57 PM Sounds like you need a damn good radar detector than under those circumstances. I wouldn't play around. I'd spend the money on the Valentine1. I've got a cheap Cobra but the cops around here are pretty good.
08Bullitt215 05-13-2008, 04:05 PM yea i know im really considering it bc i already have one too many tickets and i dont need anymore
ThumperMX113 05-13-2008, 04:13 PM Ya, I wish I had the extra cash for one. I've just got too much other stuff I want to buy.
acascianelli 05-13-2008, 04:19 PM Valentine 1 > *
http://www.radardetector.net/ Lot's of good info there.
You can't go wrong with a V1. I personnaly like the BEL products (Beltronics and Escort are one and the same now, btw) and I'm running the BEL STI-Driver.Matter of fact, I just returned from a trip and had at least 2 definite saves.
A number oftop-of-the-line BEL's have excellent sensitivity. There's a link on the above website to some very good test info. You can get a decent BEL (Vector series) for around $200-$300. I wouldn't mess with most of the cheaper units.
lrgnation 05-13-2008, 04:22 PM valentine one is probably still the best.
08Bullitt215 05-13-2008, 04:26 PM hmmmm i see i see
157db 05-13-2008, 04:28 PM Escort is next in line under Valantine1
ThumperMX113 05-13-2008, 04:30 PM Agreed. The Escort/Passport is a pretty nice unit. I like the design of the case a lot better than the V1. I'll probably end up getting that one when the time comes.
plutnicki 05-13-2008, 05:01 PM I've had Escorts of various models over the past 16 years. Only speeding ticket is on my motorcycle, which
did not have a detector on it.
Currently I'm running a Solo S2. The sensitivity is a bit reduced, but it works surprisingly well and there are no
wires (hard or otherwise), which I like. I have a Smartcord from my previous Passport that works in a pinch.
Silencer06 05-13-2008, 06:18 PM This subject is going to get you about as many varied opinions as you'd get if you asked which oil people use, and that's been asked here a million times too. Every time I see this subject in a new thread, inevitably I see that most of the replies say the Valentine is the best. Maybe it is or maybe it isn't, however, I own the Bel RX65 and can tell you that I personally think it's the best....because it works for me. It's saved my butt numerous times and notified me from long distances in several others, and I do mean numerous times (so it's already paid for itself). Is it "the" best detector on the market though, as many here will lead you to believe? Well who the heck knows really, but I'm extremely happy with my Bel and THAT is what matters most. In fact, I'm going to buy another one for my wife's car....not a V1.
My point is NOT to tell you that you shouldn't trust the opinions of the people here. This is a great group of Stang owners for the most part, and they're usually right on target in most cases. No, my point is basically that all of the high-end detectors are very, very, very good, and depending on which site you look at to gather your opinions, you're always going to get different opinions...but you shouldn't let anyone here (including me) sway your purchase decision in the end. Our opinions may help validate your own thoughts and concerns, but in the end, YOUR choice matters most. When I bought my RX65 it was rated the best of the three top ones (V1, RX65 and the Escort) on THAT site I bought from, yet as you can see, most of the users on THIS site prefer the V1. Does that mean unequivocally that it is THE best detector? NO! It's an opinion shared here, but not necessarily everywhere else. Most people on THIS site also say either Mobil1 or Royal Purple are THE best oils, sooooo, which is FOR SURE the best? Does anyone HERE really know? Fact is, you can buy any of the three top detectors and you'll definitely be very satisfied. I'm basically just saying that for a subject like this one, I think you're far better off doing your research on NON-forum sites and deciding for yourself so YOU are happy with YOUR choice, not someone else's influence.
Wow, that got away from me....
If you've already received too many tickets, why don't you just drive a little slower. I'm sure you can still have fun and save several hundred bucks.

Because cops are f-in sneaky. I never realized just HOW sneaky until I got a detector. They will actually STALK you when you're driving a sports car such as a mustang. I can now observe their habits and it's startling.
My weapon of choice is the Escort 9500i and I would have paid $1000 for it because it's saved my butt that many times...
Still seems like a waste of money to me, good luck with your driving record!
Rubrignitz 05-13-2008, 07:12 PM Oh god are you in LE? There's one in every detector post. They would hate for you to learn their tactics, which are pretty dirty. My driving record wasCLEAN until I got the mustang. A week later I was picked out of lineup of 5 cars for doing 45 in a 40.Not the Hondas or the minivans or the camrys, yeah the MUSTANG.(Took defensive driving and had it expunged) I ran to the local BestBuy and bought the most expensive detector they had. Almost a year later I'm ticket free again.
Sorry, you lost me with LE. They must be bored as hell to pick you out of a lineup for going 5 mph over the speed limit. I've been driving for 30 years and never got a ticket for speeding. That is, I've never been caught. Good luck!
Rubrignitz 05-13-2008, 07:19 PM LE=Law Enforcement. Keep on driving your red mustang w/o some sort of protection and you'll eventually get that "first ticket in 30 years". Unless you never keep your eyes off the speedo! ;)
I have my fun, trust me. You just have to know where/when to have it. Big Brother doesn't scare me.
Rubrignitz 05-13-2008, 07:26 PM This is true, but when you live in a major metro area (if you want to call austin, tx that) it's kinda hard. Cops come running anytime they hear exhaust. I've actually been next to a guy at a stoplight, rev'd my engine enough to do a quick tire spin w/o the car moving and the cop across the way at the stoplight thought it was someone going through the light making the noise. He floored it through the light chasing someone he thought made the noise. Funny, but just goes to show...
TheRebel 05-13-2008, 07:59 PM Check out this site: http://www.radarbusters.com/mistakesarticle.cfm and read up on some of the defferent detectors out there. I personally use the BEL RX65. It has awsome dectection. I've picked up those things on the side of the road that tell you your speed from up to 5 miles. Wish it had the signal indicators though so I knew were to look. Sometimes the range of BEL gets annoying because you may never see a cop.
simplexdesign 05-13-2008, 08:00 PM I have the Escort Passport 9500i....Best Radar Detector out there(Have been thru a few)....Saved me many times
justin_burke05 05-13-2008, 08:04 PM ya man just slow down.. i got a cobra off ebay just for in town really..(cops around here will get u for about 5 over) but i dont even use it a whole lot.. might help im from a small town but for instance if your out on the highway an oncomingcop can just flip on his radarand no matter how much u spent for your top of the lineradar, your still busted
Rubrignitz 05-13-2008, 08:05 PM I would LOVE to have the front/rear indicators along with the false filtering of the 9500i. Escort - are you listening????:D I've had friends with V1's and had to turn them off in city because of the constant falses. that was enough for me to know I'd never have a V1. don't get me wrong, they are cream of the crop but the falsing drove me crazy.
Rubrignitz 05-13-2008, 08:08 PM Funny thing, I've NEVER been hit in the Austin area for laser. Took my detector in a rental car for work in the valley (McAllen, Brownsville areas) and got hit for the first time with laser. I refuse to mount my front license plate and I don't think they can target me with laser because of it.:D I've passed MANY cops with laser units and my detector has never gone off...
dcottrell6 05-13-2008, 08:49 PM Bel RX65 here.
It has good range and works well for me.
imnotmy77stang 05-13-2008, 09:57 PM i just picked up a bell 955 after looking ALL OVER THE PLACE and seeing every time that it was the best detector in the 200.00 price range. also supposed to be about as sensitive as their RX65 just has a few less features.
time will tell if its good or not - i sure miss the soothing voice of my old cobra though. damn thing was like 7 or 8 years old and the voice was better then than the bel's is now.
Eric261 05-13-2008, 10:39 PM Ok if you want the best ill save you time in doing research there are basically three top dogs out there, each have their specialties but all are very good and will save your @ss. The top three are the escort 9500i the Bel STI and the king of the highway the valentine 1. To make it really simple the bel sti is the only detector on the market that is completel undetectable by spectre honestly I live in virginia though and travel on the major highways ( mind you Radar detectors are illegal here) and I use my V1 mounted high with visor clip and havnt had a problem.
The escort 9500 I has a lockout feature controlled by gps to lock out annoying x and K band frequenices from random doors of supermarkets and such so your radar detector stays quiet around town however this metho has also shown to have some problems and in there have been more than reports of this feature not detecting a cop because the area was locked out by the gps feature so keep that in mind.
Last but not least the Valentine one. The only radar detector on the market that uses arrows to tell you where the source is ( which I find personally very hepful because sometimes theres a cop coming up behind you and you wouldnt know with any other detector other than the V1 so the arrows are money) also from the test results ive seen and well pretty much alot of people on radardetector.net will agree the V! has the best range and it is the only radar detector that uses a rear ANTENNA. Personally the V1 is not that noisy and I love knowing any source of radar being used in my immediate area ( its for the paranoid haha) also your V1 is always upgradeable which is a + never have to buy a new detector just uprade the old one for much less the cost of a new one. wow that was a long post but I think I covered everything pretty much to keep it as short as possible. BTW V1's are 400.00 not 600$$
Their all good and you cant go wrong with any of them but I jsut chose the V1 because of the arrows, rear antenna, and the fact that its upgradeable.
Btw - wouldnt trust a cobra the false sense of security it gives you thinking your safe will get you in to some trouble.
If you want more info the people on radardetector.net are very helpful and if you want to see some tests conducted by a creditable source visit guysoflidar.com
ThumperMX113 05-13-2008, 10:39 PM God, I hate people who come into this thread and just respond with this stupid crap; "Just drive slower". He didn't ask for life advice, he asked what radar detector was the best.

umm yea and I told him what was the best did I not and gave him info on each to save him time searchng around!?!? Is there a problem with me giving a full response to his question or should all posts be limtied to just a few sentences?

fakesnake 05-13-2008, 10:49 PM I like the VAL 1 because of the direction finder that tell you where the threat is coming from. And I have had the same unit for six years, they don't change it so you can update it with new guts whenever something new comes out. So it never goes obsolete, unless a completely new type takes over in every police force, and thats very unlikely. The Val has saved me many many times. But occaisionally a unmarked cop will cruise down the road without any radar and pop you with his calibrated speedo. Happedned yesterday. I said well you got me, I was speeding....then she said slow down you can go. Pays to be honest and not give them a hard time.

Eric261...I see you're fairly new to the site so I should alert you....just because you see a post that says "in reply to Eric261", that doesn't necessarily mean the person actually replied to YOUR message. If you hit the "post reply" button, the new message will automatically reply to the most recent one posted. In this case, ThumperMX113 was obviously replying to someone else and just hit the "post reply" button. I don't think any of what he said was meant for you. With that said, however, this is a perfect example of why I QUOTE a message that I want to reply to so THAT sender knows I was replying to him/her, not just any random post.
Hope that helps...
ZeroIngold 05-13-2008, 11:34 PM I have the bel RX65. I have not had a ticket since. Go to the website where rob gives his review. I picked based on the range and not being detected by cops as I was working in Virgina at the time. I got it off ebay for 200 which compared to the sti, V1, and bel 9500i is a great deal and the only thing it really does not have is gps and arrows.

Shipwreck 05-14-2008, 12:55 AM +1 on the BEL RX65. I got it last year and has helped me out many times.[sm=gears.gif][sm=lildevil.gif]
boomer123 05-14-2008, 12:59 AM radar detectors arent even worth it for me, valentines are tested to detect the best and fathest away...but what good are they if the cops radar is off? Most of the time CHP use auto on(the radar gets flipped on right when you drive by or they leave it off and flip it on if they think your speeding) radar detectors are absolutely pointless when this occurs(i know from experience....) Yeah, my dads valentine has saved me from a few tickets when i was driving his porsche, but its definitely not worth $500 to me, just dont speed, or be aware of the cars around you and check your mirrors constantly!
Now, if there was a radar jammer on the market that worked that would be a whole different story =)
boomer123 05-14-2008, 01:01 AM Plus Chp arent stupid...they know everyone has radar detectors now, so (atleast around here) ive noticed they rarely drive down the hwy with radar on, its more of flipping it on here and there when someone is passing another car etc.

PhattyDre16 05-14-2008, 01:53 AM Radar detectors, blah blah.
Jammers are where its at ;). Too bad they are expensive as hell.
ensign_lee 05-14-2008, 03:05 AM I remember when I was researching radar detectors. I found the Beltronics RX65 to be the best value per dollar spent; and it works pretty darn well.
Mr.Bape 05-14-2008, 03:37 AM I read the article about the Stealth-One incoporated into the beemers dash, and was wondering if you can pull that off with our mustangs as well?

Doesnt matter if you do or dont have a plate they can still target the vehicle.

www.valentine1.com Best 400.00$ mod ive ever bought. Paid for itself within a few weeks haha. Numerous saves.... and also given me numerous warnings of cops driving with me/ around me and behind me.
johnnyv8 05-14-2008, 05:12 PM I have a solo S2, & its agreat detector but its getting more pointless by the day to have one. The other day, i wasgoing down the AC expressway I noticethe staties have a new to toy. People where being pulled over by the staties everywhere i looked.SoI took the hint and did 70the whole way downwhen bam, my s2 gets hit w/ the laser and a spilt second later there a trooper on the side of the road around the bend w/his lil new toy.
However most cops dont have aflip on radar nor a lasercuz there a lotof money next to a reg radar. I live in S.jersey and i knowof only one town (medford lakes)that has or use a flip on radar, and only now do the states have lasars..whichis gay; cuz there no way a radar detector going to save you.
06Redfire3V 05-14-2008, 05:50 PM K-40.
For the first year of your purchase if you get a speeding ticket; you send it in and the company will pay for it. You can't get much better than that.
Eric261 05-14-2008, 06:18 PM I think you missed the fine print with that model.:D Trusting a k-40, RMR, or cobra = is like trusting a pile of bird poo attatched to a lighter cord.
