im on a tight budget this summer, and im deciding to jsut stay small as far as upgrades go. If I just add lowering springs anmd nothing else is this going to hurt my car? Chances are this is the last summer ill be racing this car because im trying to save for a cobra.I want to lower it 1.5 inches and no more upgrades .. does this seem reasonable to make the car handle better for one season?

STANGSUSPENSION

Well considering you have a 1996, with stock shocks/struts I'm assuming.... I do not think its a good idea to install aftermarket springs without installing shocks & struts. It may actually handle worse, and be more erratic than if you just stayed with the stock springs.

If you're going to do it, at the minimum I'd install a set of Tokico HP's, with some lowering springs.
