Default Installing underdrive pulleys on 87 GT

Hey guys, My son 15, recently bought an 87 Mustang Gt. This is the car he has always wanted and he loves it. He wants to put a set of underdrive pulleys on. How hard is this and are any special tools needed? Any advive or tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Guy

its probly the easyest upgrade for the money, all that is needed is basic hand tools, you will need to remove the serp belt, then remove the bolts in the fan and then remove the fan and shroud toghter, the water pump pully will come right off in your hand after you remove the 4 bolts in the fan, then you will need a impact gun to remove the nut on the alternator easy, other wise it can be a pain having someone hold it wile you break the nut loose, and last is the crank which is just 4 bolts, normaly the compression of the motor will hold the crank still wile you break the bolts loose. then just place your new pullys in there spots and tight then up. do the fan last, if you got any question just ask, also does the ac work in the car? if not. remove it! theres a few horse's there, ill explain how to do it if you want to.

Do not change the pulley on the alt. You will have charging issues most likely as it is from the pullies but changing the alt pulley will make it worse.

I guess i will third the alt pulley statements. I used the March set as well and have had no issues with the alt. charging my battery, and its in the trunk. Breaking the alt. was a pain though, you have to use an impact on it and fix the fan in place. I fooled around with it for a while in place, but just pull it off and break it loose. Easy upgrade.

Thanks for all of the help. It went pretty smooth. Had to take the alt off and take to Auto Zone. They got the nut off. I guess time will tell if we have any charging or cooling probs. Thanks again, Guy

I wouldn't worry about any charging issues. I have an 88 with pullies and I have had no problems. I would worry more about the cooling system. Make sure your thermostat is good (switch to a 180), fan, fan clutch, radiator etc......oh and change the coolant temp sensor.
