I own both along with many other rifles and hand guns. The AR15 is a .223 cal. and the M1A also know as the M14 when I was a Marine back in the 70's is a .308 cal. The .308 cal. will make a small hole going in and a very large hole coming out your back side. The .223 cal. will stay inside your body and just bounce all over your body tearing up everything in its path. Either way both will put you in your grave.

Some groups still use the .308 M-16 A2 religiously. I personally am in love with my H&K 416. It is a undeniable upgrade to all assault rifles available
Good vids

The only thing I hate about the AR-15/M4 series of rifles is the caliber. Being in the U.S. Army, we of course use the 5.56 edition because it's made to wound rather than kill. It really wouldn't be so bad if we would go back to the 55gr jacketed rounds instead of the green-tipped 62gr armor piercing rounds we use. That is the dumbest thing I can think of to shoot at someone this side of a slingshot. Especially when you consider that no one we have shot at in years has been wearing body armor. So the rounds just travel straight through them and leave a hole the size of a pencil. Its retarded, we have shot some guys 5 times and they still didn't die. Its all about shot placement too, I know. But given a .308/7.62mm round we could be tons more effective with less rounds expended as well, don't you think?

+1 on poking little holes in enemies.

Not to mention the effective range on the M16/M4 isn't up to par with the larger(heavier) rounds. Just get about 800 yards out and laugh as the bullets bounce off your chest.<---kidding

Yeah, you joke but then its kinda true. The rounds just SUCK! They have a crappier trajectory than the heavier rounds and with the open sight system on the M16/M4 hitting a single person at 600m is wishful thinking anyway. (In less than 3 rounds or so anyway).
