So this is what I have, Edelbrock lower CA's, stock uppers, no quads and 2 in lowering springs. Sometimes when I go to take off I get a clunk noise. It almost sounds like its coming from the top of the shock tower but not real sure. Everything seems tight, and I had the rear suspension inspected and everything is new(shocks, springs, CA's) and I cannot figure it out.
I had a guy at a local shop(A mustang owner) check out the torque boxes and he says they are in great shape, and that compared to other fox's hes seen the undercarriage is probably one of the best as far as condition he has seen.
If that was the case wouldn't it be coming from the middle of the car? This seems to be coming from the rear pass. side of the car in the area of the shock tower. To me it almost sounds like something is loose, but I have checked, had 2 other people check and everything is tight.
Is it a fast take off when you hear the clunk noise or anytime? Were the u-joints or wheel bearings inspected? When you take off the rear squats somewhat can you try to replicate the noise by applying weight to the rear passenger side, like pushing it down by hand? Also how is the exhaust routed and place it could be hitting or jarring enough to make the clunk?
The exhaust isn't in the way, when I put the trans back in, I had to losen it up to get the crossmember back in and made sure it wasn't hitting anything.
As far as U-Joints, I am pretty sure it isn't coming from there, they seemed good when I had the drive shaft out. Wheel bearings it might be though I will have to check those.
It seems to do it more if I am getting on it, but it also does it when I back up. As soon as I start moving is when you hear it, just a single "clunk" thats why I think it sounds like something moving that shouldn't be moving.
Yeah, sounds like wheel bearing to me but you can try this as well. Hold the brake down, shift to reverse (let off clutch a little if it is a manual) then shift to a forward gear (again with the clutch if manual) and back to reverse (clutch again) if you hear the EXACT noise then u-joints or pinion..... if not and only hear the noise when wheel is moving I would replace rear bearings.... not a hard job just time consuming.
