Anyone know of a way to filter/soften hard water to cut down on the spots without having to buy an expensive water softener and plumbing it into my house? Looking for something that hooks inline in my hose. Tried the Mr. Clean thing and I don't care for it.

Water softeners are not that expensive....if you have any plumbing knowledge (or have a friend) it good Mortons or Water Boss unit can be purchased at Lowes/Menards for under $400 and installed in a couple hours.
Aside from the benefit of washing your car, your laundry will look so much better, your toilet won't get orange rings in it, your shower will clean so much easier, and of course you will feel so much cleaner coming out of the shower....and you will use a lot less soap along the way in everything you do (laundry, car, shower, dishes, etc....)

I found this in-line water softner on a site......I get some of my detailing products from. It's a little bit pricey at $130.00, but it seems to be exactly what you were looking for in a convenient water softening system.
Do you have city or well water? If you've got city water than I'd try the kit from AutoGeek.net, it's only like $140. It's a dual filter set-up that plugs into your hose line.
