I finally got the engine bay pretty smooth. I have spent weeks sanding all of the little nooks and crannies. I hate sanding by the way. I found 3 spots that I missed when I primed it. I will probly find more when I start sanding. I put two coats of heavy build black then two coats of grey. This week I will try to block it down one more time then it will be ready for sanding sealer then base coat clear coat.

that looks very nice! thats gona be one smooth and clean engine bay when completed. i always like seeing clean engine bays..imo it sets off the car in a big way. the one thing i hate when seeing classic stangs at shows is the beautiful car inside and out, and a dirty old engine bay and crusty engines. good luck with the stang! +1 I sandblasted mine, self-etching primer, laquer primer, then paint. I thought that was enough :D

Tony, are you going to be painting it the same color as what your car is going to be? or just semi-flat. I know you said bc/cc so i was wondering what you are doing specifically

I am going with black base coat. Then I will put a couple coats of clear. I will then put ralley stripes with real flame(if I can figure out how to paint them if not traditional flames)with a mix of whites and purples then I am going to use a candy purple over the whole car to try to hide my flames a little more.

why not just do the ghost flames instead of painting over them with another color?

id have to double check with a guy i know back home but ive seen those done and they look awesome, pretty sure you are just tinting some clear coat to get the ghost effect. you then would have to clear over them again but you are just clearing them not painting over them with the possibility of putting to much or an uneven coat that could be seen

That bay looks great! I just got back from spending a month working on my car. Welded up all the bay/firewall holes, wet sanded the entire car, replaced floors, T-boxes, toe boards & subframe connectors. Did a quick gray primer job on the car and bay as after a month I needed to get back to the wife. :D

Something I noticed on yours.. Whats with the cowl? Are the vents covered? I don't see them.

Also, are you going for clean bay walls? At this point in your resto its a great time to think about it. Nothing in my bay but the engine, rad, 1 aluminum overflow cylinder on each side (rad & wiper fluid), steering box, brake booster & hydraulic clutch. Walls are all going to be nice and smooth. Everything else is going into the trunk, under the fenders or under the dash.

I welded my cowls shut. That was the first mod that I did. I am putting the candy in my clear. I am undecide about moving my battery but I am trying to hide as much as I can. I want my bay as clean as I can get it. I dont want to se anything more that I have to.

it doesnt seem that hard. fairly easy it seems like actually.

I just cut out panels to fit in the holes. My cowl was clean on the inside. No rust through. Which surprises me with all the moss that was growing in there. I just like the look of the vents gone.

here is an update. I blocked it down with 400 and was not satisfied so I spent some time smoothing it out some more. I just reprimed it with grey again today and will hopefully get to block it out again tonight. With luck I will be able to apply sanding sealer and base coat clear coat this week after work. It all depends on how it looks after I block it out again.
