Hey guys, im new to these forums and new to being a mustang owner as well, just bought a 68 last week. Im really excited, i got a great deal.

Anyways the first thing i want to do to it is get some new tires and wheels, because i noticed a rather substantial crack in one of the tires rubber and dont wanna risk it.

I was thinking a width of about 250-265 in the rear and 210-220 in the front.  What im wondering is: what kinda of space do i have to work with on these 68s? Right now it has a pretty ****ty set of AR 14" rims with 205/70/14 tires on them and it seems i have plenty of space in the rear bit it looks a little cramped up front.

Right now i plan on putting some AR 17" rims all around but im not sure what do do about back spacing, because i really dont wanna order rims and then have them sticking out too far past the fender.  Does anyone know anything about what type of backspacing would be ideal for a 265ish rear tire and 215ish front?

Thanks in advance for any advice you have.

get a wheel with a ~4.5" backspacing and youll be good.

if the wheels have a bigger BS, then you need spacers. i have 05 bullits on my stang and i need 2" spacers in front and 1" in back.

but AR or vintage wheel works offers custom backspacing. i myself am gonna get the vitnage 45's, 17x8. they need no spacers cause they have a bigger lip due to the correct backspacing.

this will help you a lot

Hey thanks, i thought i read somewhere that someone had done a wheel chart.  Yeah i do like those Vintage 45s. I can't decide between AR's Torq-Thrust or the Vintage 45s...they look pretty similar. Is there much of a difference between them?

Would i have to cut out the wheel wells if i put a 275 tire in the back of my 68?

They should barely fit with a 17x9 wheel with the proper backspacing.

Yeah really handy chart there, thanks man.

np:)  It's an old chart, and the VMF has it posted on their FAQ section.

Dodgestang's charts are much more in-depth and cover various suspension mods, but I like this chart for basic guesswork.

I've got 17x7 front 17x8 rear Vintage 45s on my 68 coupe. not sure if yours is cp or fb...
Here is a pic just for reference since you said you are considering these rims.

Wow man, that looks amazing...my 68 is a similar color and i was skeptical that the gray would look good, but it looks awesome on yours.  What width tire you have on there?

jonward786 -> RE: Wheels/Tires for 1968 Mustang (5/12/2008 3:45:25 PM)

Ok i think im gonna go with the AR's Shelby Torq-Thrust M for the rims.  A friend who works at a tire dealership told me a 17x9 wheel is not wide enough for a 275 tire...is this true?
