View Full Version : 3.55 Gears from Ford worth it?
JJSoCrazy 05-11-2008, 04:07 PM I am getting my 2008 GT/CS within the next week or so and decided on getting stick. I am getting it loaded and wanted to know if it is worth it to get the 3.55 axel option? Does it make the car faster and better handling? Or in what case does it improve the car?
Thanks!
Joe
Stkjock 05-11-2008, 04:15 PM yes... its worth it. it will help with acceleration. not handling
of course you may just want to get 373 or 410s after the fact!
Argonaut 05-11-2008, 04:51 PM If I had to do it again (note that I did have 3.55s at purchase) andpay extra for the 3.55s my answer would be No. And here's why - if you are into Modding at all you will soon be paying again for either 3.73s or 4.10s.
howarmat 05-11-2008, 04:55 PM I say no. Get the 3.31 and upgrade to 3.73 or 4.10s later.
jdmcbride 05-11-2008, 07:23 PM I was looking for a Mustang GT with 3.31s so I could upgrade to 3.73s, but the only one that could find with the options I was looking for had the 3.55 option.
After having the stock 3.55s for a couple of months, I am pleased with the performance. I did a few mods (see sig) that actually helps the car accelerate better, so I will be sticking with the 3.55s (not worth it going to 3.73s from 3.55s).
Note: My car is a daily driver that may never see the drag strip. If I was a regular at the track, I would definetly go with 4.10s. [sm=shades.gif]

2cokeman 05-11-2008, 08:24 PM There is a noticeable difference with 3.73 from 3.55, I can say from experience!
ensign_lee 05-11-2008, 08:35 PM Given only the choice between 3.31's and 3.55's, I would say yes. Fortunately, thse aren't the only two choices:
If you're on this forum, you're going to be modding your car sooner rather than later. And then you'll pay to have 3.73's or 4.10's installed. So no, I don't think it would be worth it. Save the money to get the shorter gears. ;)

if you are basing this off the change from the GT to the bullitt that is not a fair comparison
pascal 05-11-2008, 08:46 PM Don't the stock manual GTs come stockwith 3.55 anyways?
And the autos with 3.31?
howarmat 05-11-2008, 09:10 PM nope $300 upgrade now
atvcrazy 05-11-2008, 10:11 PM still nobody ever mentions 3.90s
1morepart 05-11-2008, 10:28 PM nope, get the stock gears and through them in the trash for 4:10's,IMO:)
save the money and put it to a lower gear...you won't be disappointed!
JJSoCrazy 05-12-2008, 12:29 AM Sounds like I got a choice to make. I am def going to upgrade gears and other mods because I can't wait! I might jus stick with the 3.55's for now to get better acceleration but then I will g2 3.73's. Since it will be daily driven, I see no point in putting 4.10's.
Thanks!
Joe
Blue07GT 05-12-2008, 12:33 AM 3.73s = Awsome.......That is all
Humboldt Stang 05-12-2008, 12:41 AM Mine came stock with 3.55's.
I now have 4.10's and couldn't be happier.
It's my daily driver, and I've put on almost 50k miles in 2 1/2 years.
I don't know if I would've been happy stepping down one gear size, I don't know that it would have been as enjoyable a difference.
Going two sizes is freakin' awesome.
I love the power to the wheels.
If I were you, I'd save my money, and then go for the 3.73's later like you said, but if you were me, you save your money and go for 4.10's and and some whitening toothpaste, because you'll have a permanent grin on your face.

LOL Plenty of toothpaste for sure!:D Dont u waste more gas though with the 4.10's?
Thanks!

If you intend to do any significant highway I'd say go right to 3.73's instead of 3.55's. If you intend to do track, then by all means, 4.10's.
90% of my driving in the Stang is highway and my 3.55's do me well. Otherwise, I'd have at least 3.73's.

When I was shopping gears, the 3.90's were not available from FRPP.
ThumperMX113 05-15-2008, 12:34 PM I got the 3.55s, I don't want to mess with the gears. I might go F/I so it won't help me too much.

I say no. Get the 3.31 and upgrade to 3.73 or 4.10s later.
The 3.55 upgrade is like $300 on 08's. Save the money now, get the 3.31's, then upgrade to 3.73 or higher later.

nope $300 upgrade now
holy turds. I like how at first they came with 3.55s then ford started charging $100 in 07. Now they are $300? Ford sucks im getting a chevy[8D]

Whats wrong with 4.10s on the highway? As long as you do the speed limit (70mph here at least) you can get some gas mileage. I got 300 miles to a tank with my 4.10s.
ThumperMX113 05-15-2008, 03:27 PM 4.10s would be horrible on the hwy IMO. I'm turning 2500 at 80 RPMs with 3.55s so I don't even want to know what my gas mileage would be with 4.10s. The highest I'd go is 3.73s and they say it's not worth the money to only go up one size, you need to go up two sizes at least.
Daniel60 05-15-2008, 03:33 PM I drove from Charleston, South Carolina to Savannah, Georgia cruising at speeds of 75 and average 24 miles a gallon. the other day I switched my tune for the warmer weather and have been getting great gas mileage town and interstate 23-24 mpg and I have been getting on it too. So don't believe the hype 4:10s' are perfect for this car, acceleration is better and the car is no doubt faster going to the red-line. When I had the 3:55s the car would reach power and then I would change gears. Now it stays in the power curve and it is no doubt an advantage for those of us who aren't fortunate to purchase super chargers. JMO
howarmat 05-15-2008, 05:26 PM 2 weekends ago i drove to WV and got about 23-24 mpg for the trip there and back both. 4.10s might decrease the mileage a little but i will take them anyday and still get that mileage
ThumperMX113 05-15-2008, 05:29 PM Do they make 3.90s? What brand are you guys going with? I hate you guys ...;)
moburto07GT 05-15-2008, 05:38 PM i agree with atvcrazy....3.90s should be also be metioned if you are upgrading....when i finally retire mine from a DD to a weekend warrior ill be having 3.90s installed.....if they are still available [&:]
moburto07GT 05-15-2008, 05:42 PM You can get the 3.90s from here http://www.americanmuscle.com/motive390.html
but they are the Motive gear sets......and if i remember right they will whine a little more than the FRPP gears
howarmat 05-15-2008, 06:23 PM yeah the 3.90s are motive so that is a turn off for people. The install has to be a little better for them to not whine
rcj2000 05-15-2008, 07:40 PM my 3.55 upgrade were only $100 bucks not $300 bucks

Yours an 07? If so that's why. It's now $300 for 08s. Go figure.
gman73 05-15-2008, 08:47 PM Compared to the 3.55s, when you have 4.10s and step on it, the MPGs drop faster, but once you let your foot off and drive normal speeds your MPG will pick right back up.
