ORIGINAL: HEAVYMETALMATT oh you didnt know, nothing beats a british car in top gear. NOTHING. and they severely bash american cars. every episode where an american car is ran they have to say something about rednecks and sleeping with your sister.
They are just pissed off that their British companies are owned by American and German companies. I remember when they tested the GT500 and didn't know the difference between wheel HP and crank HP on their dyno. The guy was like "oh looks like its a GT 500-almost hahaha!"
However, Jermey did do a bit on the 60's Mustangs and claimed it was one of the greatest cars of all time "...It sounds like God shouting..." That makes me wonder, is he really a dick, or are his real opinions clouded by the show writers giving British viewers what they want to hear. Probably more of the former
I agree. He actually that the mustang was the greatest car of all time, period, even mentioning in one of his euro-mag writeups that bouncing back from a poor model run (mustang II anyone?) is one of the hardest things to do in the auto world. And that his favorite cars of all time are the original Mk.I-III 7.0L Ford GT40s and the Ford GT. makes you wonder. At least he didnt rag on the Z06 like Richard did.
I read a test of a Challenger and a new Bullitt and the Challenger beat out the Bullitt despite being heavier. The tester thought it was because the Challenger had Goodyear Supercar tires. Forget what magazine it was though.
The new GTs/Bullits kick the poo out of the 5.7L magnum chargers(is not a HEMI, badge doesnt mean sh*t) but the 6.1L HEMIs are mean mofos. I would have been shocked if somehow Edmunds came to the conclusion that the Bullit was faster than an SRT-8 anything stockvs.stock
All they were able to get was a 13.7 out of the Bullitt? I've heard numbers more like 13.2.
I was surprised to see that 13.7 time also. I had no idea that the Challengers have hit the streets. It's a nice night here.. think I'll go for a cruise towards the Dodge dealerships and peak in some showrooms.
That's 100% correct. Modern day vehicles use 'Polyspherical' combustion chambers, because they're more efficient and less costly to build. True HEMI's are out there...Porsche, Aston Martin, Ferrari and other super car builders use the HEMI design in some of their vehicles. I guarantee you won't find a HEMI head design in modern Mopars.
Supercar builders... Peugeot's PRV6 was a true "hemi" too... They build supercar concepts, but never really built one for the road. The fastest Peugeot is still the 405 T16 4x4 sedan which was built between 1993 and 1995 If my mind is not mistaken. Pretty pathetic if you ask me...

Granted I"m a little out of the loop with the names of the guys on the show, but if you think the guy ragging on the Z06 was bad, you should've seen the show they did a couple years ago when they put a Z06 on the track against a DB9 and the Z06 won.. LOL. Talk about trash talking American cars.. Though as was said earlier, it's probably more of the BBC and their "lets show the colonists what we REALLY think of them" attitude than his personal opinion..
I wish we actually GOT the speed channel over here so I could WATCH top gear. lol Some of their shows are actually pretty good.
I'd have to say I'm a little jealous of the OP actually getting to run one of the new Challengers.. I'm just waiting for them to come out mainstream so i can see how much the new SRT is actually going to be. I can definitely see that being a car I'd seriously consider a few years from now if they're still around.
The reason they rag on the american cars so much, is because they are used to the surperior build quality and handling of their european cars. I'm talking interior, where they tend to not cover everything in cheap plastic and aluminum look-alikes. Also, Lets be honest, the mustang, from the factory doesn't handle on par with the cars they are used to reviewing.
But, you get what you pay for. Hence the higher price for those cars.
I've said it before, they prefer their horsepower on a silver platter. I'll take mine loud and raunchy. Watch them again, when they get on the loud pedal of a mustang, all they CAN do is smile. Thus, the mustang's appeal.
As for the displacement and GT mixups; remember, to everyone else, all mustangs look alike.
I love top gear, it's extremely informative and it's full of witty British humor. You can't be mad at them making fun of rednecks and such. It's the same thing as us making fun of them for being uptight and having bad teeth. It's all in good fun.

Did you guys see the one where Jeremy tested the Ford GT? He LOVED it. Said it was one of the best cars in the world. He admitted he was going to buy one. They don't hate American cars. They just hate the crappy ones.

True, but I would hardly call a brand new C6 Z06 Vette a crappy american car. lol It happens to be one of the best if not the best production car, the only competition for it being the Viper as far as performance is concerned. And the GT is a supercar, not exactly a production vehicle. True, when it comes to the INTERIOR quality of american production vehicles, I.E. luxury, creature comforts and whatnot, the Europeans and Brits especially have it down pat. But the Z06, and especially the new ZR1 when it comes out are hardly the typical "yank econo-box" as they referred to them on the show. Now I will admit that he did say he loved the GT, but that only goes to prove he's a waffler. And I would venture to say that he only did so because the GT performs like or better than, and is comparably priced to British cars like the DB9, V12 Vanquish, DBS, Lotus, etc, that are all well in excess of 100k, with the exception of the base model Lotus Elise.

I reiterate my point. They gotta have the muscle, AND ride quality similar to a Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress, equpiied with air-ride. Complete with baby-seal fur seats, laced in golden thread, handwoven by master craftsmen. It must also have steering so sharp that it can initiate a barrell-roll on command.
Price is secondary.
All I care about; is it fast?

Amen. Although I do like nice interiors..... aka complete opposite of Vipers. That interior is gross.
Good interior is nice, sorta like gravey. You don't have to have gravey for the turkey to still be good. For myself, interior is second and performance is first. The exception being that if the interior is so poorly designed and laid out that it becomes difficult or uncomfortable to drive the car.

Who cares how much horsepower it has, all that matters is how fast it goes!
Best run 13.23 at 106.97mph with a 2.183 60' Times from before tune and driver mod.
It seems like edmunds is always trying to put a better car against a mustang that arent in the same price and/or category.
Sounds like that show "Top Gear" on BBC. Once claimed to use a S197 GT for a race with a actually horse but were actually using the V6 S197. Another show quoted the new GT500 as a 4.6 L or soemthing can't remember. Then they raced a Roush built S197 vs a Lotus(forget the model) and the Roush was winning until the last turn and mysteriously skidded a bit and Lotus passed and won. Looked staged. Host Jeremy is such a douche with his attitude towards US cars. Sorry about the off topic

the jeremy guys actually owns a ford gt... and has stated many times even tho the old 60's mustang was a cave mans car, he still loves the simplisty of it...
the other guy stated he loves challengers or chargers... forgot which
they dont HATE american cars, they just like overall good road and track cars... muscle cars and road courses generally dont go together...
if i recall they have also made cracks at the british... their humor comes from them ripping on things... dont get so defensive, if you cant laugh at urself you dont have much right laughing at others.

nice - I believe with the hemi they are a low 13 second car even with all that weight. I can't wait to run with one to see there disappointment when they are looking at my tail lights...

Can you tell us why they aren't hemi's. I'm curious.
Because the heads dont have hemispherica combustion chambers, the trademark of the classic Hemi V8sl. Hemispherical - spherical = Hemi. The 5.7L "HEMI" is more of a high-tech 5.9L Magnum than anything else. Daimler/Chrysler just made a smart move when they started throwing 5.7L V8s into everything with four wheels and slapping HEMI badges all over their cars.
I was wondering if you could tell me why you don't think they are hemisperical heads. I watched a hemi purist that owned a Viper try to argue with an SRT engineer at an SRT track event. The engineer had cut away engine photos and on his laptop and eventually the "purist" had to eat crow. I'm actually very familiar with the new hemi's and the argument some have. It certainly isn't a wedge head, although it is different than the old 426 head. The new heads are not as deep, and have a tiny squish pad at the top of the chamber, that's where some purists cry foul. Bunk..it's a hemispherical head, although you could argue it's a semi-hemi.

I'll help Clif on this one.
The 2007 Dodge Ram 5.7L HEMI or 2007 Dodge Charger R/T 5.7L HEMI for example holds 345 Horsepower and 375 Lbs. of Torque respectively. The horsepower output is Horsepower-per-Cubic Inch of displacement in a pushrod engine. 345 HP = 345C.I. (Horsepower per Cubic Inch in a pushrod has been around since the 1970's, with the first being the Corvette Stingray 350 I believe).
Wheres the HEMI power that the original Mopar cars were throwing out?
