Advice on a new rear end

Lord Ashram -> Advice on a new rear end (5/11/2008 8:05:39 AM)

Hey all,

I know, I know... a tech question in OT?  Well, the tech sections are a bit of a pain, and there are a lot of good car guys here, so...

Anyway, my car was making some noise at low RPMs... almost a low whir or hum.  Brought it in, mechanic (who I have never used before; I moved, so...) said the rear end needs rebuilding.  Said it would cost either 1100 or 1300, depending on if the gears need to be replaced too (I think that is what he said?)

So what I was wondering is this; he is going to rebuild it with stock parts.  I do NOT have a ton of cash, but is there anything there that should be upgraded now to prevent breakage later?  Also, I don't know WHAT parts he is redoing; honestly, once you get to the rear end and around the gears I have no damn idea what you are talking about.

Anyway, thanks much guys.

do you have a stock rear end?  about how much do you really think you can put out?

Lord Ashram -> RE: Advice on a new rear end (5/11/2008 8:08:15 AM)

Yep, stock rear end and the car dynos at 420 RWHP and 426 tor.

99GTvert -> RE: Advice on a new rear end (5/11/2008 8:12:36 AM)

ever looked into a 31 spline setup? (31 spline axles, new rear diff)

do a search in the 4.6 section, there should be several threads about upgrading the rear end.....

although are you sure the rear end is going out? do you have stock gears?

Lord Ashram -> RE: Advice on a new rear end (5/11/2008 8:17:45 AM)

I do not have stock gears.  I am not sure if it is the rear end, to be honest; at this point I am just going on the mechanics diagnosis... I don't know enough to diagnose it myself.

So lemme ask a newbie question; what the hell is a 31 spline setup?  What does that even mean?:)  Embarassed to ask in the tech section:)

SKAR -> RE: Advice on a new rear end (5/11/2008 8:22:26 AM)

stronger axles, less likely to snap

and go to another shop and see what they say about it, shop around, id think for less than $1300 you could have another rear end in there

like skar said, they are stronger over the stock 28 spline setup.  they are a little thicker and they are less likely to break on a hard launch, especially with a supercharged new edge.  i guess the stock rear could be giving out, but you really should do some searching in 4.6 tech about this.  you don't need to post a thread, because all the threads you see should have enough information to answer any questions you have.

mustangman02232 -> RE: Advice on a new rear end (5/11/2008 9:08:46 AM)

it would probably be best to go with a 31 spline set up, but that is a costly build as well

i doubt the R&P needs to be replaced, if you want to do it on a budget hunt down a detroit true trac and just put it in the rear end for the cheapest way out of oit

if you decide to go all the way, a eaton E-locker (can be a posi or locker) and a 31 spline set up is what i would do

Explosive -> RE: Advice on a new rear end (5/11/2008 9:13:00 AM)

Few things. I think shims, spider gears and/or something else. My truck also does it. Like when you're driivng you just hear a constant hum while rolling ? I;ve heard they can do that and be fine. While others can do it an break. Your call.

NYstang -> RE: Advice on a new rear end (5/11/2008 10:02:29 AM)

1100?! holy crap!

I see complete 8.8's with lockers, 3.73's, and 31 splines on Ebay for that price

k0261886 -> RE: Advice on a new rear end (5/11/2008 10:13:10 AM)

I'm guessing this is including labor Mr. President

Zanador -> RE: Advice on a new rear end (5/11/2008 10:22:05 AM)

1100 to 1300 for a WHINE?

Wtf is he doing, plating the gears in GOLD?

I could understand that price if he was having to replace the carraige and the axles... but if it is just a rebuild, that on average is 500-600, even WITH new gears.

A good eaton 31-spline carrier would be about 400... 31 spline forged axles 200-300. Gears, labor, a new driveshaft for fun...

It would be more expensive than 1300, but not by much, and a hell of a lot better.

stangman94 -> RE: Advice on a new rear end (5/11/2008 11:43:44 AM)

Its probaly your gears whining so 400-600 for new r&p
