A buddy of mine picked up a used 2000 mustang GT and after driving it around a bit he's telling me that at a stop there is some difficulty going into first gear and reverse.  This car had some bolt ons when he got it, and one of those appears to be a short throw and an aftermarket clutch of some sort.

Anyway, I told him i'd look it up for him and ran across TSB #04198 "Manual transmission hard to shift into first/reverse from a stop."

Bingo. Given that it's not something else unforseen, what kind of repair is he looking at?

Thank you in advance for your help.  Forums like these are great resources.

I just went to Ford last week seeing as how I just bought my 02 mustang gt and wanted to have the tranny checked out for any possible problems. They checked it, tranny guy said mine was in MINT condition, but they told me about the TSB anyway. Its probably going to be replacing all the synchros in the transmission. Comes out to about $2300. DEFINITELY NOT WORTH IT! with that much money you can get a TKO 500/600 swap and have a much more reliable transmission that can handle way more power. Honestly, if its not that bad yet I'd just ride it out til it completely quits. He can always try and fnd a used transmision in a junk yard too.

that's a bit disappointing.  Anyone with a less grim prognosis?

oh, and 2300 would be a ripoff for a manual transmission rebuild regardless.

bump for more opinions.  $2300 is a bit rediculous.
